It's slightly weird watching one of the western world's major political parties committing suicide like this. But at least it's interesting.

I'm glad to see that TSE's stint as guest editor is as usual quiet, dull and doesn't require a new thread as often as Jos Buttler hits a six.

Edit - and sixth like Owen Smith in this two horse race and Labour in the 2025 election.

Great news. Unfortunately September 24 seems ages away. I want to see Corbyn emerge victorious with a clear mandate to begin a purge of the unfaithful.

Smith on 68% with 'proper' members.

Given the vastness of his own member that seems appropriate.

My favourite stat of the day. Jos Buttler scored England's fastest ODI 50, off just 22 balls. After 7 balls he had only scored 1 run, which meant he scored 49 from 15 balls.

Actually no the best stat today was this.

Prior to the 2015 world cup, in their entire history England had managed scores of 350 just twice in 650 ODIs

Since the 2015 world cup, England have managed 7 scores of 350plus in 28 ODIs

One very last point re Apple:

I suspect that the Apple/Irish government appeal will focus on the fact that the tax arrangements between Ireand and Apple fell under the exemptions for encouraging regional development. (In the same way the UK government offered 'incentives' whih helped Nissan move to Sunderland, etc. )

What makes this difference, and where I think compromise will be reached is that the nature of regional development assistance (include tax holidays) is that they are temporary in nature. That is, they are of the nature "Hey Multinational, if you build a factory in Newport, you can have reduced tax on its profits for five years." The Apple deal was unlimited in duration.

So, Apple will argue that the tax deal should have been limited to 25 years (i.e. now), the EU will argue for 10 (because Apple didn't make much money in the 1990s so they wouldn't be giving up much), and they'll settle on 20, which means Apple won't repay very much (a couple of billion), but will need to move to the standard Irish corporate tax rate of 12.5%.

350 is so 2015. 400 is the new target and with this batting line up they should hope to get there fairly regularly. If Hales and Roy both click together it will be something to see. And Stokes didn't even get a bat today. Poor Bairstow didn't even get in the team.

Corbyn has "low support among long standing members"; 68% for Smith from members who joined before May last year.

Nothing encapsulates Labour's nightmare more than these numbers. Hard working members, many of whom have given years to the party, knocking on doors etc etc, have had their party stolen by a bunch of entryists from hard-left splinter parties and neophytes who have never met a swing voter on a doorstep in their lives.

    Electoral disaster awaits.

It's no surprise for the simple reason, as has been pointed out consistently, that an election winning chunk of the selectorate did not seek out a vote in order to participate in a Labour leadership contest, weighing up the merits of the candidates with an open mind and voting accordingly. They sought out a vote to vote for Jeremy Corbyn.

Sky Sports did a segment a few months ago showing Bairstow and co doing hitting drills. Nasser basically said in his day nobody could hit like that. Bairstow was explaining how batting technique has altered massively since even started playing.

I was watching a segment on the change in modern golfers swings compared to Faldo era. Its a similar thing, Tiger came along smashing it miles, they altered courses, and now the idea of Faldo straight down the middle course management is dead and buried. All the top modern golfers have a very different approach to swinging the club.

I gave a talk today to a Chinese think-tank group about how British democracy works, using slides from 18 months ago, and was dismayed to find one woefully out of date: "Party membership is now deeply unfashionable with all parties under 200,000". The change is remarkable - and of course the wave of new enthusiasts wouldn't be swamping the older members if the size of the older membership hadn't been withering on the vine for years.

The underlying issue remains that the centre-left needs not just an attractive leader but an attractive project. That will remain important regardless of whether people split or not, and its absence will doom any new party in the same way..

There is surely going to come a point, soon, when bats are going to have to be modified. At the moment there are too many grounds that are just not big enough in the same way as we saw with golf courses when drives went up above 250m.

The underlying issue remains that the centre-left needs not just an attractive leader but an attractive project. That will remain important regardless of whether people split or not, and its absence will doom any new party in the same way..

Sorry, I fail to see where an "attractive project" is going to come from Corbyn and co.

There is surely going to come a point, soon, when bats are going to have to be modified. At the moment there are too many grounds that are just not big enough in the same way as we saw with golf courses when drives went up above 250m.
They certainly wave massive lumps of tree trunk around these days.

What they also did in golf was limit the maximum head volume, as again with modern material the equipment makers were able to produce drivers with massive heads but where light enough to swing but had enormous faces which increased so called trampoline effect.

One day I might understand why Vince played ahead of Buttler in the test matches. Maybe.
I dunno... they bat in different positions, Buttler has consistently failed to translate his one day form into the test arena (similar, for example to Hales), Vince was obviously picked to do better than he has, batting in test cricket is a different art to limited over cricket, Buttler effectively made himself unavailable at the start of the summer...

Smith supporters hoped to: 1. Narrow Corbyn's margin of victory. 2. Win among at least one group. @YouGov poll suggests neither likely.

I think unlike Hales and Vince, Buttler doesn't appear to have massive technical flaws. He is also a better keeper than Bairstow. Perhaps play Bairstow as the specialist batsman and Buttler as the keeper? Got to be better than Balance or Vince.

Still got the big problem of opener position and need to find more options in the bowling department.

However terrible a candidate Owen Smith is, I'm struggling to imagine who actually could have beaten Corbyn. The only name that comes to mind is Alan Johnson, but would anyone have had a chance against the army of post-GE true believers?

Not really. As I said yesterday, I know a number of the switchers in this group. They aren't, in general, especially anti-Corbyn. But as longstanding members they prioritise winning, while the new recruits tend to prioritise getting an attractive programme - something we've discussed to death here. It's not really fair to describe most of the latter as entryists, though obviously there are a few.

Thing is, I don't think one can actually win an election without enthusiasm. I've yet to meet a single Owen Smith enthusiast, though I guess Don is one. Nobody hates Owen and at least he's got the guts to stand, but he's just not rousing any real support.

Based on my experience with Labourites in my patch, I would expect Corbyn's win to be even more overwhelming than this - though admittedly, the mood might be quite different with the London membership than it is round here.

In any case, it's no surprise at all that quite a few "ABC" voters from last year have switched to Corbyn. Any idea that the Labour "moderates" have the maturity and the political nous to successfully lead the party have been completely shattered over the past year, where we've seen them constantly scream like toddlers, showing no self-discipline whenever something they don't like is happening, offer no constructive solutions instead of just pointless moaning, tell outright lies ("John McDonnel broke into my office") and mastermind laughably feeble "plots" which would make Homer Simpson blush with embarrassment. And that's without even getting into that they called the EU Referendum spectacularly wrong, and that, if they'd had their way and Labour had made a "passionate" case for Remain, the two-thirds of Labour seats which voted Leave would now be lost for a generation.

Has anyone else seen Paul Flynn's new proposals for MP expenses? Doing away with receipts - because it is too much of a chore. So in the Corbyn future, MPs will be able to claim everything without scrutiny.

To be fair, indicting Corbyn for the loss of EUref is daft. Labour voters split similarly to the SNP and I don't hear calls for Sturgeon to commit seppuku.

I see no way forward if this poll reflects the result. Labour are in zugzwang.

Inevitable and deserved. He was elected with a huge mandate by membership just a year ago. The way the PLP have behaved, seeking to over-turn that mandate, was a disgrace.

Let this also be a lesson to those anti-democrats who are seeking to re-run the referendum...

Smith is an extremely ordinary candidate but at least there is some prospect of the PLP working with him rather than against him. Corbyn really is a road to oblivion. Perhaps his supporters will be happy when a significant part of the PLP loses their jobs as a result.

One of the most unfair things is how Corbyn has been blamed by his opponents for Brexit.

The person who failed to energise the Labour vote was Alan Johnson. He played a key role in the campaign. For Chrissake, Johnson couldn't even persuade his own constituency to vote Remain.

Leave took 67.6 per cent of the vote in Hull. Remain were walloped in Johnson's Hull.

And somehow, the conclusion of this is that Corbyn is to blame for Brexit, and Johnson is not.

Some sort of Pledgehenge? An entire army of Elvis impersonators? Gerry Adams campaigning alongside Corbyn? Accidentally designing a new logo for the Labour Party that looks a bit like a swastika?
Far from this continual balls about a 'progressive alliance', I expect we'll see a couple of enterprising New Labourites switching to the Tories. Lining one up for the first day of the Labour conference would be fun...
Good luck to them holding their seats in the ensuing by-elections.
Erm, have you seen the polls?

I can name at least two Labour MPs who would win under any label. Labour is the C&A of today; only really exists outside of the U.K.,and it might yet become the BHS.
You think the Tories would GAIN seats in byelections??

Did you see the results of this year's local elections?

I'm glad to see that TSE's stint as guest editor is as usual quiet, dull and doesn't require a new thread as often as Jos Buttler hits a six.

Edit - and sixth like Owen Smith in this two horse race and Labour in the 2025 election.

I'm absolutely sated at the moment. I can barely function.

I was at Trent Bridge today, Oh Lord what a time to be alive.
Watched the highlights today. Incredibly they almost slowed down towards the end. And then we had Root scoring "only" 85 in 86 balls. Surely 450 is on the cards soon.
I reckon if slow coach Root or Hales had gotten out 5 overs earlier, we would have got 500.

When the England innings ended, I swear to Allah, the crowd, especially we English fans gave out a sigh that you only manage after a post coital cigarette.

AND I'VE GOT TICKETS TO HEADINGLEY, PLEASE LET US WIN THE TOSS AND BAT FIRST
One day I might understand why Vince played ahead of Buttler in the test matches. Maybe.
I dunno... they bat in different positions, Buttler has consistently failed to translate his one day form into the test arena (similar, for example to Hales), Vince was obviously picked to do better than he has, batting in test cricket is a different art to limited over cricket, Buttler effectively made himself unavailable at the start of the summer...
Well Buttler would not have played where Vince did in the batting line up but at 6 or 7 he would have the potential to be another Adam Gilchrist. Such talent really should not be denied.
Drop Vince, Bring Ali up to 4, Bairstow at 5, Stokes 6, Buttler at 7.
Ali at 4 is too high.
He should be 3....thrived there for Worcs.
FC average of 38.77. Nothing special.

More importantly, at Test Match level, has he shown the consistent ability to dig in for long periods, technically very sound, never giving opportunities etc etc etc, which is what you need from #3 / #4.

For me he hasn't. He is fine coming at 7/8 and being very dangerous if he gets going.
