    Advice from PBers.

What's the best hotel in Blackpool? Preferably close to the beach.

The stars have (mis)aligned and I need to spend a night in Blackpool.

I hear The Gallant Pioneer is THE Rangers bar, very close to the beach and a great atmosphere.

    Probably.
    Staunch brogues are essential.

Varoufakis would have been an inspired choice.
I think he may have burnt a few too many bridges - but for the Lols alone he should have been nominated by some side or other..

As with Lush, I doubt that hardline conservatives form part of Nike's core demographic of customers.
It’s an interesting broader question though.

The original flag was obviously an important symbol in American history. It was misused and adopted by white supremacists/ KKK.

Does that mean that it should be forever taboo or is there a way to “reclaim” [sic] it for the mainstream?
Try that with the 'swastika was an ancient Indian symbol of divinity' stuff and see what happens.

If I was an Indian who followed that faith then there could be an argument. (Don’t know if there any adherents left). If it’s someone with no connection to the history it’s clearly bollocks.

For example, the Scots didn’t behave particularly well in Darien. I don’t think that should prevent proud Scots using whatever the Scottish flag was at the time as a symbol of they so choose.
The English have behaved appallingly just about everywhere and that does not prevent them pushing the union jack up everybody's nose

This seems to put the nail in the coffin of his theory as to what Boris Johnson would in fact do as Prime Minister with a majority.

Far from it, Boris has confirmed he wants a FTA and to remove the temporary Customs Union for GB and he himself will never accept the backstop and will seek to renegotiate it with the EU, however if he gets a majority and the EU still won't budge and Northern Ireland voters decide to vote for the backstop until a technical solution is found to the Irish border well reluctantly he would have to accept that choice put upon him

If only the EU had overridden the party blocks last time. No Juncker. No need to blame his unsteadiness and slurred speech on sciatica. No need to listen to his endless barely coherent verbiage in the European Parliament. No embarrassment over his tax arrangements. Just possibly that would have swung enough votes to stop us leaving.

And they also wouldn't have Selmayr to deal with.

Darien is so inhospitable that, even today, it is impossible to traverse by road - it’s the only gap in the Pan American highway - the so called “Darien Gap” in fact has no roads at all. It was not blockaded. While London refused to give any support for fear of upsetting the Spanish who claimed the area there was no “blockade”, it was a dumb idea in the wrong place. A look at the area today will tell you it was doomed to fail.

We stayed during the hottest weekend of the year, the rooms were tiny, and so was the bed, but the rest of the hotel was lovely, the restaurant overlooking/on the beach was breathtaking.

As for the town, there was a LIDL nearby, and I lost count of the number of smackheads and druggies we walked pass.

The most astonishing thing about that place is that it has a Tory MP.

It is the sort of place looks like that is has had only Labour MPs since Queen Victoria's reign.

It’s got St. Andrew’s Cross in it... shared

Not only does Morecambe have a Tory MP, but so does Blackpool North, and Blackpool South has a Labour majority of just 2,500.

Prediction: if Boris actually becomes PM and lasts, he will fall out with his CoE over spending/tax.

Why would he not appoint a CotE that agrees with his spend and tax policies?

Boris can try and renegotiate the backstop and if the EU refuse propose to Leave the EU aiming for a GB FTA and no backstop for NI but if necessary No Deal.

He could then put that to a referendum in NI, if NI voters say No Boris can say, sorry tried my best but have to respect democracy to avoid a hard border with the Republic of Ireland

Even the EU want a technical solution to replace the backstop ultimately and that would still be compatible with a GB FTA

I am interested in this question and i have not seen that the WTO can take universal action, for clarity I have not seen that they can not. Having said that the normal sequence of events is that a member instigates the action and it must prove that its trade has, has being the important word, damaged by the actions of the country that has made a change. This means that a period of time must past to prove the trade has been damaged and what country would be able to claim that if we did implement implement tariffs or not that are the same for the RoW as they are for RoI?

No we move to a FTA and a technical solution for the Irish border and hold a referendum in NI on that proposal or the backstop, if they vote for it it is the EU with the problem, if not Boris can state he tried to stop the backstop but NI voters disagreed

To be honest the exact technicalities escape me but I have read in a number of articles that ROI and NI can just ignore the rules without sanctions. The most recent implied that the EU would in those circumstances have to implement a hard border between ROI and themselves. I think I’ll stick with the football now!

I stayed at the Midland in Morecambe last year.
What did you think? Interesting hotel less interesting town?
We stayed during the hottest weekend of the year, the rooms were tiny, and so was the bed, but the rest of the hotel was lovely, the restaurant overlooking/on the beach was breathtaking.

As for the town, there was a LIDL nearby, and I lost count of the number of smackheads and druggies we walked pass.

The most astonishing thing about that place is that it has a Tory MP.

It is the sort of place looks like that is has had only Labour MPs since Queen Victoria's reign.

This seems to put the nail in the coffin of his theory as to what Boris Johnson would in fact do as Prime Minister with a majority.

Maybe, although his actual plans don't seem ideal for his stated aims either.

While I know everybody is watching the football, I thought I'd write a quick comment on Christine Lagarde's appointment to head the ECB.

I've never met her, but I have friends who worked for her at the IMF. They all have a great deal of respect for her: she's extremely sharp, and very driven.

What she is not - though - is an academic economist. What views she has are pretty orthodox (the IMF shaped her, rather than the other way around). She believes countries need to live within their means, and I think she's likely to clash early and often with the Italians.

(That being said: I wouldn't be surprised if she resurrected the Eurobond idea - where countries debts are severally guaranteed up to a certain percentage of GDP. The price for this, though, would be the ECB taking an increasingly activist role in policing countries budgets.)

(That being said: I wouldn't be surprised if she resurrected the Eurobond idea - where countries debts are severally guaranteed up to a certain percentage of GDP. The price for this, though, would be the ECB taking an increasingly activist role in policing countries budgets.)

Christine Lagarde got the IMF gig because George Osborne rather spitefully refused to nominate Gordon Brown, who was preferred by the Americans.

So Boris also commits to avoid a hard border in Ireland

and also no border between us and Northern Ireland..
    Gay marriage?
    Abortion?
    Railways?
    Number plates (road vehicles)?
    Political parties?
    Nope
    Nope
    Nope
Many people in NI actually use GB numbered plates until their car is 3 years old and the garage swaps it to an NI as it's sold on.
Nope - it's still on religious grounds
I'm fairly sure there are railways in Northern Ireland.
They run on a different gauge to the rest of the UK - which is what Sunil will care about...

5ft 3in to be exact, as opposed to 4ft 8 and a half inches "standard gauge" on GB and most of the rest of Europe.

Notable exceptions on GB include 4ft gauge on the Glasgow Subway, and various narrow gauge heritage railways.
