Battle-shy on Brexit, the Labour leader no longer looks like the hero who had Glastonbury calling his name in 2017

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/02/jeremy-corbyn-liability-brexit-labour-party

”It is hard to present Corbyn as a man for the future, and May’s departure will date him even more. He will be a stale continuity figure from the time of stasis, irradiated through years of loitering ineffectually amid the referendum’s toxic fallout. His aura of specialness has dissipated, revealing the man in all his flawed mediocrity. ”

Rafael Behr makes an error in his article by stating that Corbyn has now been Labour Leader longer than Callaghan. Not so - Callaghan held the position from early April 1976 - mid-November 1980 - ie over 4 years and 7 months.
If Corbyn had stood clearly for the Brexit he has always supported for respect worthy radical reasons, while at the same time been radical about the left's shameful history of anti-Semitism and support for reactionary authoritarians he could have renewed the left in this country in a truly interesting way. Now even the Guardian think he's a bit sad. What hope is there for a renewed and interesting left now?

My sister played for a full women’s team once and she was one of only two straight players.

Suits the BBC agenda : gentleman Jack, killing Eve , women’s football . Time the licence fee was scrapped , it has become a minority channel taking the majorities money . And when you look at what they have been paying their top celebs : disgraceful waste of public money
I wouldn't be surprised if Killing Eve turned a profit. And I doubt the BBC paid much for the Women's World Cup soccer rights.

One of the positives of Women's football is that there are lots of out Lesbians, and nobody seems bothered (well nearly nobody!). How unlike the mens game.

Nobody except ‘Casino Royale’, whose only comment on the England ladies football team is based on sheer ignorance of the sport, followed by an irrelevant inquiry into the players’ sexuality.

    Funny old game.

So men watching women's football are either:

    a) Thinking about having sex with the players

    or

    b) Thinking about the players having sex with each other

    It's a funny old game.

Ok I accept that killing eve is profitable and quite entertaining , But the BBC has lost its way and panders to minority groups and is no longer a channel for the vast majority of licence payers . An overpaid and overbloated organisation which thinks it has a divine right to exist . It needs root and branch reform and needs to get back to doing what it was good at once upon a time , good dramas , light entertainment , serious investigative journalism, and education and representing the best of Britain on the world stage ,

As remarkable as it might seem, the BBC doesn’t control the schedule of the Women’s World Cup. Fifa does that. Perhaps they should screen it as a recording at 2pm the following afternoon?

Well, what were tonights viewing figures?

6.1 million watched England play Scotland. I am sure that tonights audience would be bigger.

Considering Britain's obesity rate, and low exercise rate amongst teenage girls, a bit of positivity about female sport is very much a public service.

Yes ads could be a way of reducing the license fee and reduce some of the vitriol aimed at it by the right wing press.

People need to see the state of public broadcasters in other countries and then they’d really appreciate it.

And the BBC brought us the wonderful Saga and the Bridge amongst many brilliant foreign tv series .

It’s brought us excellent coverage of Summer and Winter Olympics and of course Wimbledon which I absolutely love .

It doesn’t always get it right but it’s part and parcel of life in Britain .

No other country has a television licence fee . If we do want a public service broadcaster pay for it out of general taxation

How do shows about women make the BBC a minority channel? Women form a slight majority in this country and the BBC show the men’s World Cup. What on Earth are you on about?
Women’s football is not widely enjoyed or taken seriously , even amongst women ! I have no issue with women playing the sport , but it’s hardly peak time viewing , the BBC is heading for a slow death the way it’s going , far better entertainment now on Netflix and amazon prime and Now TV
Each to their own. I have no interest whatsoever in the sport of tennis. However, the wall-to-wall fortnight of tyranny which is Wimbledon is now upon us. On the BBC. With women, (a significant proportion of whom are lesbians).
Strangely, the huge expense of that is rarely criticised, despite it being scantily watched in comparison to football, until the finals.
Presumably, that is "traditional "? Or, is it just the right sort who watch it?

Interesting to see fitness play such a big part in the game this evening. The Americans were far stronger physically. That’s one area where the men’s game is very different. In international football you’ll generally find sides are physically matched these days once you get to a tournament. That will come in the women’s game, too, but right now it’s a huge advantage for the US.

You really are full of poop.

Lots of other countries have a tv licence fee.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licence

The Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago notes that two-thirds of the countries in Europe and half of the countries in Asia and Africa use television licences to fund public television. TV licensing is rare in the Americas, largely being confined to French overseas departments and British Overseas Territories.

The USA women's team always do the same thing at the start of each match: they try to out-run the opposition in the first 15 minutes and force them to make silly mistakes as they try to play at a pace they're not used to playing at. It happened again tonight, although you'd think England would have been ready for it.

I quite agree. There is not enough high quality free-to-air sport on in this country. Inevitably, some of us aren't interested in some of it, but there you go. You can't please everyone all the time...

It doesn't bother me these days because the BBC has so few programmes worth watching. So they might as well show tennis as far as I'm concerned.

The BBC coverage tonight was fine - without the need for Gary Front Bottom Lineker - his wages could pay for a lot of pensioner tv licences.

    It’s more popular than cricket.

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/10/womens-world-cup-match-breaks-tv-audience-record
In fairness, that’s probably a consequence of the cricket being on a subscription channel (Sky Sports) more than an outright popularity test. However, the viewing figures for the women’s football have been pretty impressive, all that said.

Question. If the Americans can coach American women to play football this well, why can't they do the same for the men? Seems odd that the women's team is this strong when the men's team is that weak

    Two factors:

    1. There is stiff competition for male athletes - NFL, Basketball, Baseball, Ice Hockey - that aren't there/nearly as strong for female athletes.

    2. Women's soccer is not nearly as prevalent in the rest of the world as the men's game, though it is growing.

Also, I'd say the USA men's team have had their moments. I was at school so only saw highlights, but I think they were very unfortunate not to beat the Germans in the 2002 World Cup Quarter Final. They could have made the final that year. And I think they did okay in the 2010 and 2014 tournaments.
USA mens team knocked us out in the group stage of our first World Cup.
Actually it was Spain who did so.

The BBC spend more money on their Glasto coverage than the Men's Football World Cup. Their ethics are all over the shop.

The REAL BBC "pay gap" isn't between their highly paid female presenters and their even more highly paid male presenters.

It's actually between all those people, the BBC elite if you will, and the rest of us plebs.
  • Ms Brisk does like her Glasto coverage though. We were reminiscing about our ups and downs of Beeb Glasto today.

Personally I only really utilise the World Service (well mens world cup and wimbeldon as well I guess) which I would have once cockily been able to state came from FCO funds, sadly no more.

Hmmmm, tbf the beeb are paying somewhat the market rate.

The yank on Sky news papers, Kate Andrews, doesn't think their is such a thing as a gender pay gap (overall, not just BBC) once you take into account sensible factors and I like that position.

    Something algos???

All of the above plus showing off you ethics?
I have no idea, the fair value of the book looks to be about -£109 to me.
So just showing off your ethics then? Can't say I wouldn't have hit that button.
Maybe he's just curious to know what's going on?

I'm highly doubting hitting the button will suddenly give me £36.40 profit in the market. I've asked Betfair_Cs anyway.
  • You're green by quite a bit on Oct to Dec and the markets not closed yet.

I guess you're gambling every second you don't hit the button.

    Trust in the algos

Is ToryHome supporting Hunt? Their front page has a big graphic saying "Public back Hunt as best PM over Boris by 41% to 29%"

No, that is Hunt campaign advertising (most Tory and Brexit Party voters of course back Boris as I have pointed out on ConHome)
Clever of Hunt to get his advert positioned like that.
  • While we all marvel at Pulpstar's leet skills.

I note that there ain't exactly much liquidity in the B&R Betfair market.

Do they always start like that?
  • 8000 maj - 8/1 - Well okay 7/1.

    It's a sign.
  • Yeah I reloaded - I'm a high roller really.

    I'm green Con and Brexit.

Can't possibly be as bad as my last late night bet shenanigans. (Well I guess technically, from an accountants position it could be worse)

See you on the other side people
