    Catch 22 of Brexit.

Going to the country before Brexit will be dreadful.
Getting Brexit done without going to the country seems to be impossible.

Boris might want all sorts of things, but there is the small matter of the October deadline to finesse - a word not entirely associated with the buffoon.

None of the parties are financially ready for a GE. I also think the Brecon result will be important in people's thinking.

My view is that whenever an election comes the Tories will be hammered.

So, if there is an election to come, it will be forced on Boris.

If Boris is using Lynton Crosby now, doesn’t it suggest he’s already planning to go to the country?

No, I think it suggests nothing more than that he is taking this election seriously.

I still don’t see an election this year.

Laying 2022 at 4.4 is however an excellent bet

Up to a point. Kyrgios was just a baw hair away taking responsibility for his own lack of commitment & it keeping him from a Grand Slam, then it was back to whining about the umpire & macho pish about aiming for Nadal's chest with his return. Once he realises that the best way to really annoy people would be to win a Grand Slam he might turn the corner.

I doubt an election will occur unless it is forced.

I think a comparative situation is 1990-1991, when John Major replaced a very unpopular Margret Thatcher. The economy was sliding into recession, the poll tax was causing social rebellion and things were focussed on international relations. The Tories could have gone for an election in 1991 in the wake of the first gulf war. Britain had after all been a significant contributor of military assets, a force we no longer have in the numbers we had then! No election happened then but the Tories did have a substantial parliamentry majority, which they dont have now.

Elections and specifically General elections take months to organise, I dont see the activity in fundraising, political contact and the like taking place at the moment. So I dont think a GE will happen this year.

I see on the earlier thread there is a post about this changing of the May Day holiday.

Not much bothered about Morris dancers but what I am bothered about is the impact on people and businesses who have planned stuff, like weddings.

Either the government should make both the Friday and the Monday holidays, or they should reverse the change.

I've always through the leadership contest would in effect fact be the first act in a general election campaign (that's why Boris is limiting his media appearences IMO - as he'll have to do it all over again in September and October)

I think the election will be called on 5th September when Parliament returns from recess.
  • By far the biggest judgement call Boris will have to make is when to call a GE whilst Corbyn remains Labour leader, since this is the only possible basis on which he and the Tories have any chance of remaing in power.
Labour Party members must know in their heart of hearts that they have sunk so low in the polls that a new, probably far more moderate leader is what is required to virtually gauarantee their return to office, be it this year, next year or whenever.
Should the likes of, say, Keir Starmer win the big prize, it's not difficult to envisage Labour's support leaping into the 30%+ range in no time at all.
Boris' problem in the short term, even with Corbyn still in place, is that the Tories are in severe danger of finishing with a voting support level in the low 20% range, thereby finding themselves forced out of office by a Labour/LibDem/SNP coalition.
Btw with a 2019 GE looking increasingly likely, does anyone agree with me that Ladbrokes' odds of 1.75 (3/4 in old money) on there NOT being an overall majority, looks like stonking good value?

Interesting thinking. I think snap general elections tend to have negative consequences for incumbant parties that have been in power a while i.e 2017, 1974, 1951. Since the second world war i can think of only 1966 and the second 1974 election when a new administration got an improved mandate. The 1955 election it is true increased the Tory majority but i believe it was strategically planned to change leader around the time the Tories needed to go to the country again

The idea is good, but it should have been announced a lot earlier. You'd think the Tories would have a better idea of the need for businesses and individuals to be able to plan.........

Interesting - a realistic cost for a 100% renewable US electric grid is around 20-25% of GDP:
    https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/renewable-us-grid-for-4-5-trillion#gs.mwo7uu

(And that’s assuming no improvement on today’s technology, which is exceedingly pessimistic.)

Spread over 10 years, that’s affordable; over 20 years, relatively cheap.
(The US spends over 3% of GDP annually on defence.)

Also interesting is that is that it would be around 10% cheaper if an element of nuclear was retained - even though direct generation costs of nuclear are
quite a bit more than renewables.

At least two major assumptions there - firstly that Labour wins more seats than the LibDems and secondly that The LibDems would be prepared to give their suppost to a Marxist Labour-led Government.

I'm not so sure about that. If the Tories lose one might think they will be wary of going to the country, but that doesn't seem like it will matter because most of the options have already been closed off and most of those that remain either guarantee or at least carry the risk that they will not be able to sustain a majority. Labour might be quaking a bit too, but at least have the option of making a decisive shift at last and hoping that secures their position a bit better. And if the Tories win in Brecon Labour might not be so keen as the Tory vote will have held up better than expected, but equally their hands may be forced as the Tories still won't have the votes to get anything through (no, rebel Labour MPs will not emerge in enough numbers to see something through) and things then get away from everyone.

Depends what you mean by support. They clearly won't go into coalition again, likely not in any of our lifetimes, but support on a few very limited points, and contingent upon very strict conditions? Why would they not?

Yes, it is so hard to make that breakthrough. As I noted yesterday the 2017 manifesto was explicitly a pitch to become the main opposition (rather than win a GE), and even though their polling was not great you can see why they might have thought that a viable option at the time, and in some ways now looks even better for that chance, but it just requires such a huge shift in some areas that are very very tribal in their voting.

I’d expect the Lib Dems to support Labour to get a new referendum .

Given they’re the pro Remain party it would look ridiculous if they said no if that condition was met.

I'm not so sure they would be hammered (because Corbyn is not popular) but I agree that an election will only happen this year if it is forced via a successful VONC.

Most likely trigger for that would be a serious attempt to implement a No Deal Brexit on 31 Oct. So if one thinks that is on the cards (ie if one believes Boris Johnson) a bet on a GE in 2019 at better than evens is good value.

But one would then be in a position of making money if Boris Johnson is true to his word and losing it if he turns out to be a bullshitter.

That is not where I personally want to be.

A fair point, but I add to that that I think even if he is bullshitting, I don't think he can successfully get anything to avoid pushing for a no deal as his only option to stay in power (even though it would lead to a GE and a big risk).

The Yellows might well prefer getting into bed (again) with the Tories than with the Labour Marxists, particularly if they were given a major, even dominant role. This ultimately would probably be a preferable course of action for the Tories also.

Personally I don't know any LDs who have a good word for the coalition years, even if the issue of how bad they got punished by the electorate was set to one side. They clearly don't want to be in a position where they could prop up either, as they don't want to fracture any support they might have, but with hung parliament's very much a possibility the LDs probably have to pick a side, even if they are much more cautious in how much they enable the larger partner to do, and how informally they do it.

I have money on Truss. Which I now regret, because she is one of the people who are no longer prepared to use fact, truth and rationale in politics. A peddler of snake oil and untruths in order to further her own career.
    .
In that case I am surprised she did not receive effusive support for becoming leader. People love that kind of stuff, because they get told what they want to hear, then they can get self righteously angry when the peddler does not follow through successfully.

Judges ruled the £350 million a week figure which Boris quoted as a gross figures was correct and not misleading https://order-order.com/2019/07/04/judges-say-boris-right-350-million-week-acceptable-gross-figure/

One further major assumption in the OKC's Confidence & Supply arrangement is that Labour + SNP win more seats than LibDem + Tories, which right now appears somewhat unlikely. The Yellows might well prefer getting into bed (again) with the Tories than with the Labour Marxists, particularly if they were given a major, even dominant role. This ultimately would probably be a preferable course of action for the Tories also.

The Lib Dems are not going to get into bed with the party that gave us Brexit. That is as close to a certainty as you can get in today's politics.

Dickheads, whoever came up with this wheeze.

The idea is good, but it should have been announced a lot earlier. You'd think the Tories would have a better idea of the need for businesses and individuals to be able to plan.........
    Oh!
If the government can give extra holidays for some royal faffery, Jubilee, wedding, whatever it was - I don’t remember, I was down the pub - it should be able to grant an extra day off for D-Day.

The only solution now is to make both days holidays.

Bozo is likely to still have some compliant Remainers in his cabinet .

He’ll need some cover to appear inclusive , the arse licker Hancock is likely to be in . The top jobs are likely to go to the true believers in the no deal fantasy .

These are likely to include Patel , Mcvey , Raab .

Hunt will be given a post although a demotion from foreign secretary . I still think he’ll offer Amber Rudd a post , it will look good .

Hammond , Gauke , Clark are all likely to be fired . Stewart will resign . I hope he fires the clueless Karen Bradley .

Fox might stay on even though he questioned the great leaders Gatt 24 guff .

The UK will cheer if he fires Grayling .

Bozo realizes that just filling the whole cabinet with the no deal nutjobs will cause a lot of problems .

I suspect there will be a couple of shock appointments .

If we get one election, then I would think another to follow straight after is pretty likely. The plausible coalitions are hard to see this time around. After a second election the parties would have more cover for any coalitions.

Plus the fact that he can't rule out having to. I think an election this year is likely, not necessarily because it's part of Boris' plan, but because the most obvious roads lead there. Boris is finished, or at best, in May-like purgatory if we're not out by 31st Oct through any actions of his government. So he either a) gets *some* form of deal passed that doesn't piss off all but the looniest Brexiteers, or b) Goes for no deal. If a) the Tories lift in the polls as the wind goes out of the Brexit party. In that case the circumstances may well just be too tempting, as there'd only be a brief period while the remain vote was too divided to hit back, like in 2017. Strike quickly enough and you'd catch a point where Labour still hadn't come to its senses and removed Corbyn, was involved in a civil war over accepting or reversing Brexit, and squabbling the Lib Dems over who were the strongest anti-Tory /Brexit party. Wait, and Corbyn's either gone, or he's still there and they try to fight 2017 again, or the Lib Dems have profited from a real Labour collapse and their own boost from a fresher leader.

If (far more likely, given a 'Boris-deal' is a total fantasy) b) then the question is whether enough Tory MPs will no confidence to avoid no deal, in which case we have to ask the EU for an extension allowing for a 'Brexit' election.

Yes, the decline is achingly painful.

The trouble is, though, America had - arguably - its most articulate president in a generation, maybe two generations, in Obama. And he did fuck all, and was a significant disappointment. So Americans reached for a more radical and desperate solution.

It's not dazzling but it doesn't compare to dear Diane:

DA: Let's talk about the real issues of crime which people are worried about. What people are worried about is the rise in violent crime.

NF: So how much would 10,000 police officers cost?

DA: Well, if we recruit the 10,000 policemen and women over a four-year period, we believe it will be about £300,000.

NF: £300,000 for 10,000 police officers? What are you paying them?

    DA: No, I mean, sorry...

NF: How much will they cost?

DA They will cost, it will cost about, about £80 million.

NF: About £80 million? How do you get to that figure?

DA: We get to that figure because we anticipate recruiting 25,000 extra police officers a year at least over a period of four years. And we are looking at both what average police wages are generally but also specifically police wages in London.

NF: And the £80 million is the figure we use?

    DA: Yeah, yeah.

NF: But I don't understand. If you divide £80 million by 10,000, you get £8,000. Is that what you are going to pay these policemen and women?

DA: No, we are talking about a process over four years.

NF: I don't understand. What is he or she going to get? Eighty million divided by 10,000 equals 8,000. What are these police officers going to be paid?

DA: We will be paying them the average...

NF: Has this been thought through?

DA: Of course it's been thought through.

    NF: Where are the figures?

DA: The figures are that the additional cost in year one, when we anticipate recruiting about 250,000 policemen, will be £64.3 million.

    NF: 250,000 policemen?

    DA: And women.

NF: So you are getting more than 10,000. You're recruiting 250,000?

DA: No, we are recruiting two thousand - and two hundred and fifty."

NF: So where did 250,000 come from?

DA: I think you said that, not me.

NF: I can assure you you said that, because I wrote it down.

As Blair and Brown taught what used to be the Labour party until a reverse take over by the likes of Andrew Murry and the communists.

Yes, but at least with DA it would be only money that was lost. Patel seems to be proposing that the Birmingham Six should have been killed by the State as it would be a deterrent.*

    * Presumably a deterrent from being Irish and living in the Birmingham area.

By far the biggest judgement call Boris will have to make is when to call a GE whilst Corbyn remains Labour leader, since this is the only possible basis on which he and the Tories have any chance of remaing in power.

YouGov gives a Starmer led Labour Party just a 1% lead over the Tories even if it backs EUref2 and indeed Boris today has a higher approval rating than Labour as a whole let alone Corbyn

Another despicable character Iikely to make the cabinet . She really is a vile piece of work .

I fail to see what makes her as "thick as pig shit" there. She is a little clumsy in her speaking, but it is hardly moronic. It's not Diane Abbott trying to do maths.

People ask how can anyone vote Labour?

Answer is that this would never happen under a Labour government:

    https://www.theguardian.com/education/2019/jul/04/figures-reveal-english-schools-cant-afford-to-teach-five-days-a-week

But to do something, you have to actually win power. On the doorsteps of middle England.

As Blair and Brown taught what used to be the Labour party until a reverse take over by the likes of Andrew Murry and the communists.
Yeah I agree with you. It's not the Labour Party I would like to have. My point is, if there is a binary choice, at least the Marxists think every kid deserves a full time school.

It's not dazzling but it doesn't compare to dear Diane...

I think you might be missing the point that Boris isn’t about to appoint dear Diane to his cabinet.

    te it down.

    FFS. Whataboutery in the extreme.

I expect much better from you! Abbott is hopeless, but it was a maths cock up.

Patel is legitimising state-killing of innocent people, or would be, if she knew what she was talking about.

I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. She’s pig thick, not evil. Suspect you are regretting going out to bat for her.
I don't regret going to bat for her, because I have done no such thing, I just don't see any evidence that she is "thick as pig shit"

Personally, I am divided on capital punishment. The state is happy to bomb innocents in foreign parts, women and children at weddings, so I do wonder at our liberal hand wringing when it comes to the state taking GUILTY lives in our own land, It feels hypocritical. Maybe even racist.

That said I am not in favour of the death penalty, on the whole. It coarsens society. And life meaning life - until you die - is also a grave and severe deterrent, without the horror of wrongful state murder.

It would be a far more effective deterrent to put prisons for violent crimes in sub-saharan Africa. We offshore everything else.
