Apparently being in the armed forces and defending your country is not an honourable profession..according to a Scot.. Gonna be a lot of Fine Scottish regiments disagree with that assumption..

You mean the one Scottish regiment.
    Don't be silly.
There are several battalions (7) in the Royal Regiment of Scotland which is much more a 'brigade' or 'division' than a regiment.
So that's the one regiment then.
    No - 7
'The Royal Regiment of Scotland is the senior and only Scottish line infantry regiment'

I'd say don't be a fecking moron if I didn't know that battle was long lost.
Yeah but how many Scottish Regiments did it take to lose that battle?

(Before any of your countrymen get upset, I know the Scots don't lose battles, that's why they've been the backbone of the British army for centuries)
They used to lose plenty of battles until they wised up and got English commanders

PMQs will be like 15 to 1 - Bercow asks Corbyn 'Question or Nominate?'

Is 15 to 1 the odds of a Labour victory?
Labour's been binging a lot of vintage gameshows recently.
    I'm sorry I haven't a clue.
    Pointless.
    The weakest link.
    Decimate.
    Shipwrecked.
    Shafted.
    They think it's all over.
    But the Knightmare continues.
    ...
    ....
A quick read through your excellent list but you missed the chance to bring Room 101 into it.

I doubt the Speaker will be so deadly to labour but Tory backbenchers should certainly call out 'Question or Nominate'.
I got a little bit of nostalgia writing that list, not just for William G. Stewart. I even managed to get a Kilroy-Silk reference in there for the Kippers (Shafted).

And you're right, clean forgot the excellent Room 101. I was trying to get the underappreciated "I've Never Seen Star Wars" in there. Apparently Jezza doesn't have much of a life outside politics (so sayeth one of the exes, and I can well believe it) so that might have been a good education for him.

Angela Merkel will expect David Cameron to drop his opposition to an EU army in exchange for supporting Britain’s renegotiation, the Telegraph has been told.

The German chancellor will ask Britain to stand aside as she promotes an ambitious blueprint to integrate continental Europe’s armed forces.

It comes as Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, said Britain will get a deal if it gives the green light to a raft of powerful new EU institutions..

Is that a problem if we are in a two-tier Europe where such proposals wouldn't apply to us?
It would undermine NATO. I love NATO as much as I love discussions on electoral reforms.
Yes - but us not being in the EU would not make any difference would it? Always assuming you give any credence to a Telegraph EU story.
As it happens the Telegraph reports significant differences between France and Germany about 'ever closer union'.

@morris_dancer aren't there any F1 analogies you can come up with for Labour or did you use them all up earlier?

On the echo chamber idea about refugees, I was basing my view that there are more pro-refugee people than you think not on the march but on the number of initiatives sto ship food, clothes etc and offer rooms tarted by non-political individuals, churches etc on fb, being covered in local newspapers everywhere.

Labour were already somewhat short on quailty people. I think this is true of the Tories too, but they have a bigger pool. Somehow there seem to be quite a lot of useless MPs that've been elected in recent years. Anyway with Corbyn's personal anti-magnetism it is an astonishing thing to see such scrabbling around to try to find anyone who might be able to be Shadow Chancellor. We all know that John McDonald wanted it, but good grief. And Angela Eagle? No, surely not - she was awful as shadow chief secretary!

We may get all sorts of dubious characters turn up. JC may want to ask Cameron if he can borrow a Tory just to fill some of his shirts. Or, perhaps one of the SNP children and nincompoops might appeal - they'd be fine, couldn't do much damage, pretty much have the interests of the country at the same level of regard as JC does,

Correction: Update - Downing Street spokesperson: government will "see through our commitments" to grant Scottish Parliament extra powers

    Sunday Times:

A POLICE investigation into claims of murder by a VIP paedophile ring has been halted after detectives could find no evidence to support the allegations.

Officers from the Suffolk force became so worried by the behaviour of the “witness” who made the claims — known only as Darren — that they have referred his son to social services.

Darren has now said that he will no longer co-operate with the police. He had previously given lurid accounts of two incidents in which he claimed people died at the hands of a paedophile gang that included a senior Conservative politician.

Survation poll Corbyn loses a head-to-head ‘Prime Ministerial’ rating contest with David Cameron by 44 per cent to 27 per cent. Asked if Corbyn is fit to be Prime Minister, a third say no, against a quarter who say yes. One in seven Labour voters says he is not fit to take charge of Number 10.

The poll suggests Corbyn’s win could leave Labour out of power until 2030. A total of 39 per cent say Labour is heading for defeat in the next two Elections, expected to take place in 2020 and 2025, nearly double the 22 per cent who disagree. One in four Labour voters believes

Labour is likely to be out of power for more than one future election.

A total of 24 per cent of voters say Corbyn’s victory means they will be less likely to vote Labour; 18 per cent are more likely. Among Labour supporters 30 per cent are more likely and 15 per cent less likely.

Despite threats by some Labour MPs to oust Corbyn, 33 per cent of voters say he will lead the party into the next election; 21 per cent say he will not. About one in eight Labour supporters says he will have been replaced by then.

@pulpstat guess my money is safe for the foreseeable future, as Andy Burnham has not become the leader of the Labour party.

Anybody else staggered at the concept that commentators are seriously discussing whether the leader of a major party will be able to find enough people from within his own party willing to serve in his shadow cabinet?

I missed a lot of pb today through being on the refugees welcome march in London. Seems to me that pb is not representative of the country on this issue. There is more support for refugees in the population at large than there is on pb. Not claiming a majority, but certainly not a tiny minority.

That may be because few people really appreciate the vast numbers of people on the move.

I myself am very sympathetic towards anyone in such circumstances, whether fleeing in fear or leaving in hope of a better future. However, I cannot see how Europe is to absorb such vast numbers without destroying the very qualities that draw all these people towards us.

No they are not, they do not appear at all competent. It is probably time to overhaul policing in England and substantially reduce the number of police forces and increase their specialisation so that they can actually tackle difficult criminal investigations.

There are a fair number of people quietly helping. My Church has been supporting asylum seekers for years in a non judgemental way. I have had a number of interesting conversations with asylum seekers over the years as a result. My barber is a Kurd who arrived here as an asylum seeker too, and I have taken on a number of doctors via a national scheme to get them restarted in their careers.

Tommorow it seems the Villa fans will be displaying a #refugeeswelcome banner at the match. I shall report back on its reception. Personally I do not want to see political banners of any sort being displayed at matches. I want to jeer at the Villa fans for their pisspoor team rather than their politics.

On an individual basis the asylum seekers that I meet are pretty decent people with harrowing stories. They are a fairly self selected bunch though as I suspect that the more dubious ones do not come to meetings in a Christian Church, even a liberal one that does not expect anything from them. Jesus was given refuge in Egypt and we take our lead from that.

The numbers need to be manageable though, and those that fail to establish their bonafides need to be deported more quickly. It is not a simple issue.
