The Tories will always be an issue on which the Tories are beaten in the court of public opinion because they have rarely been willing to increase its funding relative to health inflation and to demand.

This failure has not prevented them from winning elections in the past. Labour milked the NHS issue dry during the Thatcher and early Major years, yet it did not stop the Tories winning 4 elections in a row, nor did it stop Cameron winning a majority in 2015.

In short, Labour loses even when the voters consider Labour to be the best party on the NHS. This happens time and time again.

The lesson from this is clearly that Labour would be very foolish to rely on the NHS issue too much. At the end of the day voters will vote according to their personal pocket, and above all they will vote on the party which they consider to be the party most competent to run the economy.
