Disappointing for England to go out to Croatia tonight but still a good achievement for them to reach their first World Cup Semi Final in 28 years and room to build on in the future

Kane and Alli both didn’t turn up today. We were outclassed in midfield and in the end they had far more chances. But it is better than we had any right to expect.

No blame game needed, Sterling played a part when England were on top, Rashford was fighting a lone battle when the game was going the other way.

We went out to a quality team, it happens. Team did amazingly to get this far, it is a very young team they have a chance in future tournaments.

Gutted to go out but its been a great experience that I didn't expect.

Oh, absolutely. Froome has a chance too.

More seriously, I do think a World Cup win, lovely though it might have been, would have revived the sense of English exceptionalism; and that would have inflated people's belief that we could thrive as a buccaneering island nation divorced from the world. Reality always bites in the end.

24 countries will make it out of 55 so there is a good chance. It will be an odd tournament though with no host country - albeit Wembley hosts the final 3 matches. Each of the 12 host nations if they qualify are guaranteed 2 group matches at home.

No, the cities have been allocated already and any hosts which qualify will automatically be placed in those groups. Wembley and Hampden are in one group, so should England and Scotland qualify, they will be in the same group and will draw lots to see who will be at home when they play each other.

The big 'what-if' will be what if Rashford had been chosen instead of Sterling.

Sterling was a lot better than Rashford today.
Sterling runs about a lot but there's little end product.
Don't quite understand the game do you.

No shame in that but stop embarrassing yourself.
I see you're looking in the mirror again Toppo.

What a zinger. You're on fire.

Masks to a slight extent your ignorance of the game.
    Yet you know I'm right.

Hopefully your newly discovered interest in football will last longer than this weekend.

I know, but the way some of the more hysterical leavers were going on about betrayal I had hopes.

There's a reason I'm off to Frankfurt for the 6th time this year next week.
I sat down with our senior management (at my employer not my brother’s firm). They are supremely unfussed by the whole thing.
What do they expect will happen ?

So football's not coming home but Trump's arriving tomorrow.

    Joy of joys.

France should win the final, but they should have beaten Portugal when Ronaldo went off after 5 minutes 2 years ago

Portugal managed to win only one game in Euro 2016 within the 90 minutes.

It was a great achievement by a rather limited team.

So sad. We could have done with some good news after all that Brexit unpleasantness.

Things we have learnt? ITV should never, ever host England games, ever again.

    Ever.

Well they have another one on Saturday.

Literally nobody cares about the losers match anyway though. :D
I can think of twenty-eight countries that would like to be there instead.
    Really? Why?

Nobody remembers the defeated finalist never-mind who came third.

    Third place is for losers.

Look at the performances today. If anyone deserves comment perhaps it's Kane who seemed to have peaked before the game kicked off and seemed to go missing for the second half. There were misses all over the park. There was too much play in our own half back to Pickford, Lingard should have scored, Trippier's distribution was poor and Sterling didn't get into the game at all..

But by all means if you want to narrow it down to Sterling vs Rashford because you're arguing with someone on the internet, then knock yourself out.

They’ll likely open a small office in Germany but were going to do that anyway. Less than 2% of revenues at risk from hard BREXIT

Come on Croatia as they have a Liverpool playing for them.

Fortunately this is now a profitable world cup for me.

Death knell for Brexit. Pretty good as silver linings go.

And G is going to win the Tour.

Hm, don't you think you are overstating it a touch?
Oh, absolutely. Froome has a chance too.

More seriously, I do think a World Cup win, lovely though it might have been, would have revived the sense of English exceptionalism; and that would have inflated people's belief that we could thrive as a buccaneering island nation divorced from the world. Reality always bites in the end.
This "English exceptionalism" bollocks is beautifully self-torpedoing, in that the claim seems to be that we do national exceptionalism better, or at least more, than anyone else does. Do you see any problem with that?

England only win World Cups under a Labour Government

Well they did **** all under Blair (although I guess you'd argue that wasn't a REAL Labour government :D )

What he knows about football is only matched by his knowledge about the number of generals in the army.
Yes my fault for believing what I read on PB without checking myself.

Did you bother finding out if the British Army could field a full strength Division for its generals to command or what the ratio of Admirals to warships is in the RN.

If anyone had said we'd lose in extra time in the semi before the comp. They'd have said you needed help.
Rejoice that for once we over achieved.
And behaved ourselves. This team is a credit to the nation.
Not often that can be said.

I agree with most of that but it still hurts that this was our best chance of getting to a world cup final.

Next time we will have a great french team,Italy back, maybe the netherlands,a improved German side and the two great teams from south america Brazil and Argentina.

And for the English player in the premier league ,dwindling all the time.
Again true. But we are not a great England side either. Just a young and promising one. We can't control how good anyone else is.
And yes it hurts because it was a chance.
But we have the nucleus of a good side for the next one. The others have to start finding one.
