Gratifying that going to university makes you slightly less enamoured with the prospect of a species-level extinction event. And they say degrees aren't value for money.

On topic, I presume we all saw the UK polling this morning which showed that leavers were significantly more accepting of dissent than remainers.

Particularly notable that remainers got more intolerant with higher levels of education, whilst leavers with degrees were the most tolerant demographic found.

Is there a particular reason why SF only stood in some of the seats? I know this is historic high vote share for them, but in the UK all the established parties attempt to stand in every / nearly every seat (weren't even the Brexit going to stand in basically every one, before they stood down to let the Tories through the middle).

If Obama had had a younger running mate in 2012, or if Biden had retired and forced him to pick one, the odds are he wouldn’t have done.

The simple fact that Biden was so obviously past it forced the Dems to turn to Hilary Clinton - and the rest was catastrophe.

I'm not surprised about Sinn Fein.

In the past 2 G.E. in Ireland they surged only to crash at the very last minute, this time though since Fine Gael and Fianna Fail were in a loose coalition together, Sinn Fein had the opposition to themselves.

It's simple, parties who supported the government fell and the opposition rose.

According to t’wiki it’s to prevent a party’s first preference votes from being too widely distributed among a large slate, causing none of the candidates to get enough high preferences to avoid elimination.

Starmer will be fine and this is journalistic hysteria. If there are allegations of misuse of data then the data controller (the party) is indeed obliged to report them so they can be looked at. If some staff on either side turned out to have broken a rule, they'd be sacked and perhaps prosecuted, end of.

Obama selected Biden because of 3 things:

    1. To balance the ticket having a conservative old white guy.
    2. Biden's political base was so small and Biden so old that he was not a political threat to Obama.
    3. To deploy Biden to be his shield against Hillary inside the Party.

Hillary was going to run after Obama anyway, an informal deal had already been struck in 2008.

I actually thought the US poll shows that people are retaining a sense of humo(u)r in difficult times. I doubt if anyone thought the poll, or their response to it, were very serious.

The Tory/Brexit poll was more serious but also more understandable. If you care a great deal about England and its independence, it doesn't necessarily mean you care that much about the Union. Frankly I should think only a few people in Britain care whether Northern Ireland eventually joins Eire or goes independent or stays part of the UK - whatever they want is fine with us, no? We just didn't want to be terorrised into it by the IRA. And accepting economic damage to achieve what you think is a decisive question of indendence is a defensible point of view.

It's evolutionary biology to gather in tribes for protection.

It's still literally the case in some parts of the world. But in most places it's moved on to Cats/Prods, Sunni/Shia, United/City, Democrat/Republican. Passions run high but usually not violently.

I'm not a member of any football tribe but I was a member of the Remain tribe until I simply opted out - not to join the opposing team but just to stop playing the game. It was no longer exciting.

Is the world more partisan than it was? I'm not sure that it is. There have been periods of widespread security and prosperity when tribal behaviour was confined to football teams. But when people feel threatened they revert to more serious tribes. And people in many countries feel threatened.

Household bleach is sodium hypochlorite. The ingredient that the article posted by Screaming Eagles is about a chemical called sodium chloride. I believe it is similar to hydrogen peroxide, in that people advocate small doses diluted in distilled water for a range of conditions. Obviously chugging down a tumbler of loo cleaner is a bad idea, but I don't really see anything wrong with the advocates of this advising people to use it as a face spray or even ingesting it at a safe dilution (this does not constitute medical advice - dyor as to what is safe). We ingest harmful substances at safe dilutions all the time. Some are even put in the water to benefit us. This is quackery at worst.

Both of the main contenders' campaigns seem to have accused each other of similar offences regarding inappropriate usage of the party membership database.

The party has retrospectively re-written the rules to leave one of them in the clear, and then reported the other to the Information Commissioner.

    Yes, that all sounds healthy.

Miracle Mineral Supplement, often referred to as Miracle Mineral Solution, Master Mineral Solution, MMS or the CD protocol,[1] is chlorine dioxide, an industrial bleach. It is made by mixing sodium chlorite solution with an acid (such as the juices of citrus fruits). This mixture produces chlorine dioxide, a toxic chemical that in "high oral doses" can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and life-threatening low blood pressure due to dehydration.[2]

Sodium chlorite, the main constituent of MMS, is a toxic chemical[3][4] that can cause acute kidney failure[5] if ingested. Small amounts of about 1 gram can be expected to cause nausea, vomiting, shedding of internal mucous membranes such as those of the small and large intestine (producing so-called "rope worms") and even life-threatening hemolysis in persons who are deficient in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.

How do you get a stable government out of that?
    You don't.
Same time next week for another go around?
Talking of go around, everyone be thankful they're not on a plane today.

There's planes destined for the UK that have ended up in Frankfurt and Amsterdam, among other places. The Emirates flight to Manchester went around twice before deciding to head to Holland.

I had to read the Daily Beast article to know what QAnon was. Trump has so many mad ideas I can't keep up.

"QAnon believers are convinced that Trump is secretly at war with pedophile-cannibals in the Democratic Party, a theory so unhinged and potent that the FBI considers it a potential source of domestic terrorism."

At least they are giving the advice for free....apparently there is a big scam that has been going around the US for a while, where people buy a secret cure for (insert disease) and basically the advice is you must buy "Miracle Mineral Solution" (which is basically bleach that you self mix).

Give your opponent an inch, and he takes a mile. Britain voted by a slim majority for Brexit, 18 to 17 million, and the outcome looks likely to be complete realignment away from the European social model and toward America. The USA voted for a Democrat House in 2018, pretty healthily, and their only meaningful action has been an impeachment on almost-exactly partisan lines.

Nah, it's just an end of an era that you liked and a beginning of one that you don't understand.
It happens all the time, just think of the Communists in 1990.

It's basically splitting the UK into two, one within the EU, one without. In biology that would be a perfect example of adaptation and survival of common genetic material. Supporters of the UK should whole-heartedly back Scottish independence to hedge bets on life inside/outside the EU.

This article doesn't mention the dosage/dilution that the adherents of sodium chlorite are recommending. If they were recommending it in the quantities that resulted in the above symptoms, it's hardly likely that a community would build up around it is it?

As I said, we ingest harmful substance in safe quantities all the time. There is toxic fluoride in your toothpaste and in our water. But it's there at a safe dilution. Our leading treatment for cancer is the ingestion of deadly poisons, and yes, sometimes we do die from them.

It would appear that this substance is used against pathogens as an industrial cleaner. If there's a way to ingest it (or otherwise administer it) that is harmless to the human but probably still harmful in some way to the pathogen, it is hardly surprising that it is taking off.

Or maybe it was New Labour's naked partisanship in electing Bercow despite Conservative opposition that gave us the Speaker we didn't deserve?

    Not sure.

On topic, I presume we all saw the UK polling this morning which showed that leavers were significantly more accepting of dissent than remainers.

Particularly notable that remainers got more intolerant with higher levels of education, whilst leavers with degrees were the most tolerant demographic found.

High time we moved on from this sort of thing. So although I did think about a "Could it be that fools are more likely to suffer themselves gladly?" type offering in response, I will not be proceeding with it.

I’m afraid that trying to work out the effects of novel chemicals in the body by analogy is never a good idea. There is a reason new pharmaceuticals are so expensive, and it is the extensive testing required to make sure we don’t end up with another Thalidomide.
Even if they are in such low doses as to be harmless they prevent patients from speaking real help (see homeopathy).

Perhaps not, but I would be very surprised if that is the case. For full disclosure I myself have ingested an incredibly weak solution of hydrogen peroxide and distilled water intermittently for a couple of years. Anecdotally I find it very beneficial, though I don't have clinical trials to prove it. What is proven (by the fact that I am typing this) is that it's safe in appropriate quantities and dilutions. I have never experienced any ill effects whatsoever. I don't have any personal experience of chlorine dioxide to relate, but it seems the same sort of idea.

There are no clinical trials for these quack health cures and it's unlikely there ever will be, because they are cheap chemicals that cannot be patented. In their absence, the hysterical denunciations are par for the course. People must make up their own minds on the information available.

If you stop to think about it then it's remarkable exactly how much support there still is for the Union amongst Tories and Tory-leaning voters. After all, the closer the UK-England Venn diagram moves toward being a single circle, the weaker the position of Labour and the lower the likelihood of it coming back to power, at least without repenting of the Corbyn experiment and returning to harmless wet centrism.

It is worth remembering at this juncture that maintaining a political union with Scotland and Northern Ireland alike requires a very considerable yearly outlay of English taxpayers' money to places where much of the population feels resentful, dominated, is desperate to get away, has an intense dislike of the English, or some combination of two or more of these things. What value, therefore, from the point of view of the ordinary English voter, is to be had in keeping it on life support?

Northern Ireland is a relic of colonialism and religious sectarianism, the Union with Scotland is the product of 18th century concerns that no longer apply, and there is, in any event, absolutely no interest in reforming the Union in such a fashion is to make it a structure that is equitable and addresses the needs and concerns of all its members. So if it's going to die why not just let it?

Bercow had his fans on both sides of the aisle - but his support from the opposition benches far outweighed those from the Government side.

Plus voting against the Speaker risks not being called so often (if at all) - and Bercow did like to play favourites (as have other Speakers in the past - but probably not to the same extent)

There are well established clinical pathways by which the cumulative effect of smoking damages human health in most cases. The warnings about hydrogen peroxide are about its immediate corrosive dangers.

But I am not trying to convince you. You do you.
