haha very funny Mikey. But you prove my point.

"The People" is straight out of Wolfie Smith.

And as for the mess the parties have made of Britain - what amazing plans do you jokers have to make it all better?

    very funny Mikey.

Oh Topping doesn't like the "People": even makes fun of the people. So what are you around for Topping? Someone to lick your arse.

    However:

"So what are you around for Topping? Someone to lick your arse."

    doesn't actually make sense.

That is because the Black Isle is an awesome place, its where some of my ancestors come from. :) On certain days when you drive up to Inverness and look across to the Black Isle you can see where it gets its name from, it can look stunning.

It's a great dark hogback - hence the name - formerly a moor on its crest, now much of it afforested on the higher ground with classical Scottish Lowland high farming around. Great walks along the coast either side, and if you like small burghs full of C18 and C19 vernacular architecture or just history it's paradise. Cromarty in particular was to a large extent frozen in the early 19th century, because of changing transport links (used to have direct sea links to Edinburgh till the trains ran along the other side of the Cromarty Firth ...). Rosemarkie has a lovely museum of Pictish sculpture. And so on. One of the smaller hidden gems of Scotland.

Indeed. I once stood at the Sutors of Cromarty and took a panorama of twelve oil rigs in the Firth. An amazing sight, and one that I have not seen before or since.

Annoyingly, I've never seen dolphins from Chanonry Point, despite it apparently being the best place in the country to see them.

I've found the people on the Isle to be very friendly as well. It's like the last bastion of civilisation before Inverness. ;-)

“Harriet Harman “went crazy” at Douglas Alexander, Labour’s election chief, over his running of the party’s campaign and the role given to women, Labour sources have revealed. The Labour deputy leader also attacked Mr Alexander over plans to limit the party’s efforts in the European elections next May, in the face of scant resources and the expectation of a poor performance.”

“Ms Harman clashed with Mr Alexander at a private meeting at Labour headquarters on Monday in front of about three dozen staff, who were “shell-shocked” by the exchange, during which she accused him of speaking over her and ignoring her contributions. She interrupted a presentation by Mr Alexander to raise her issues and at one point declared that she was sick of hearing from “more panels full of boys”. She argued with him for several minutes.”

Following on from my comment on Mass immigration driving down working class wages, while making employers and immigrants richer, it occurred to me in the bath that maybe Labours introduction of the minimum wage was their half arsed attempt to control the damage they knew they were about to do by allowing uncontrolled accession in 2004...

Perhaps they thought £6 an hour as a bottom line figure would at least be more than the £3 they knew the Eastern Europeans would work for, and the bosses would be only too happy to pay them?

Harman is guilty of blatant anti-male sexism in her hate filled outburst. It's high time that she was put out.to grass.

She's just playing into the stereotype that she's trying to rubbish.

I realise that progress is patchy, but wasn't Chile an all female affair electorally?

Feminism now, and racism perhaps too, are washed up as political mantras. That's not to say that there won't be pockets of resistance, but the mainstream has moved on. I'd even hope that 'poverty', at least in the UK has moved away from the political stage.

If this is so then it is an undoubted political achievement - politics doesn't have claim to many really. Such achievement is worth a great deal.

Labour have to get away from some of that baggage. Awards in the cupboard are far better than manifestos with still one burning issue that's not been fixed for 100 years.

Finally managed to get a username! Ok I thought that the odds of 8/15 for Ed M leaving his post after July 2015 looked good (on this page: http://www.oddschecker.com/politics/british-politics/mp-exit-dates/ed-miliband)

but when I click i get taken to this page: http://www.betfair.com/exchange/politics/market?id=1.101710557&mpch=ads&rfr=63 which says I can 'back' that outcome at 1.1 which I think is odds of 1/10.

Political betting is a slow and steady game. £30 at a good price isn't too bad.

The EdM exit market on BF for jul2015 or later is 1.69/2.1 - that equates to a chance of between 63% and 48%.

There is no standard on political bets, so what seems like the same market can often be radically different. Betfair (for example) recently voided all bets on the next GE date.

4.75 = this week - first 4 polls, one poll to come

So lead was very steady at around 7% until 2 weeks ago. Then last week and this week it's tightened.
Tonights takes it to 4.8 for the week, however they are all within MOE. As always the fact Labour are still between 37-40% and have been within moe for most of the last three years still makes me think that Labour will have a workable majority.

Just had an interesting experience. Went for a late lunch, (salad followed by shrimp and grits with andouille sausage today), and paid with my American Express card, as I always do.

The lady behind the bar swiped my card and handed it back to me (I was siiting in my usual seat next to the cash register at the bar), and as I took it back - 10 seconds at most after swiping - the Amex app on my Galaxy s3 popped up and asked if I'd like to use my amex points to pay for my 'current dining event', and showing the transaction details.

Kinda cool yet kind of unsettling.

Mike posted the other day about the 'Tory majority' price being wrong. I'm not sure it is. An election conducted today would see Labour with a majority. In 2015 though the economic state-of-play will be different, and the odds for the next GE are all about that time.

What's interesting though is whether economic improvement such as we've seen recently actually translates into a narrowing gap. There is probably a little more to come, but for the Tories to stand a chance of a majority the recent economic good news has to start to show in the polls. Interesting times.

(A cure for wrong-headedness would help too of course, but that's just my view)
  • My own analysis shows that on average, Lab's share of the vote has fallen by 5% since this time last year.

But the Con share of the vote has gone up 2%, UKIP have generally ended up with the rest.

Why do Americans have "dining events" rather than "meals" or "dinner"?

So long as lunch, dinner, tea, and supper can be ordered and what turns up can satisfy an Englishman then surely there's no concern. If you can somehow mention 'pudding' early in the conversation it throws all other nationalities onto the back-foot. Happily then you can pick and choose of their finest dishes in an arrangement that suits you. Once they have recovered from the 'pudding' word it only remains for you to graciously accept their fine sweet tasting dishes as an apologetic replacement for the dish that you never really wanted anyway.

Because every meal should be a meaningful dining experience :-)

Probably more to the point the phrase covers everything from a meal at the Waldorf Astoria to a trip to McDonalds for a McRib sandwich. It's a clumsy but all encompassing phrase.
