Yesterday I heard directly the story the story that has been doing the rounds  that the Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, had already got the backing of 38 fellow CON MPs ready to send letters to the chairman of the 1922 committee calling for confidence vote on TMay’s leadership. If this is correct he needs just a few more if he is to pull the trigger to try to bring GE17 failure down.

    Although there is pretty much zero enthusiasm for Theresa May remaining as leader for the next election, I don't sense much appetite for a contest now. Since there is no clear consensus for any one successor, there would have to be a full contest, which would be an enormous complication at a critical juncture in the Brexit talks. Still, if Boris does pull the 1922 trigger, then thinks could take on a momentum of their own. Because many MPs don't want a contest to happen now, Theresa May might survive the ensuing confidence motion, but she would need a convincing majority to do so. It's anyone's guess whether she'd get that.
