imagepoliticalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Conference and its aftermath could be BoJo’s best chance of moving against TMay & becoming PM

Yesterday I heard directly the story the story that has been doing the rounds  that the Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, had already got the backing of 38 fellow CON MPs ready to send letters to the chairman of the 1922 committee calling for confidence vote on TMay’s leadership. If this is correct he needs just a few more if he is to pull the trigger to try to bring GE17 failure down.

Can anyone give me a good reason why Boris should become PM? He is amusing, good at speaking and writing, and quite clever, but as much as I like him I'm simply do not see him as PM material.

    i) He's not Theresa May

    ii) Er that's it.
  • Bojo's destructive and narcissistic cynicism is unparalleled in modern British politics.

An unprincipled chancer who is prepared to trash the future of his country and risk bringing down the government and opening the way for a Corbyn premiership purely to further his own career.
  • Hmm. Sceptical myself. The optimal time for Boris to resign was immediately after Theresa's Florence speech. I suspect he was strongly considering it but thought better of it. His best approach now is to let Theresa burn out over the next few years, then step in.

On that basis the rather over-rated Mr JRM should be in the running too.

He, also, is not Mrs May (as is everyone except Theresa May)

Although there is pretty much zero enthusiasm for Theresa May remaining as leader for the next election, I don't sense much appetite for a contest now. Since there is no clear consensus for any one successor, there would have to be a full contest, which would be an enormous complication at a critical juncture in the Brexit talks. Still, if Boris does pull the 1922 trigger, then things would take on a momentum of their own. Because many MPs don't want a contest to happen now, Theresa May might survive the ensuing confidence motion, but she would need a convincing majority to do so. It's anyone's guess whether she'd get that.

He already has trashed the future of his country. If he had sided with Cameron and Remain that would have been enough to defeat Leave.

Boris could be the answer to the question: "Which potential leader would be cynical and shameless enough to betray the cause that carried him to victory?"

  • Mr. Nick, indeed. Boris is wretched.

Someone here linked to an article he wrote about Churchill fairly recently. In it, Boris opined Churchill had taken a gamble opposing Nazism and it had paid off (propelling him to be PM).

Leaving aside the "I'm like Churchill" subtext, that does rather miss the point that Churchill did what he thought was right. It wasn't to improve his own career prospects.

I do hope the choice isn't Boris or Corbyn.

  • There were always dark tales about letters to the 1922 committee being at tipping point during Dave's tenure. They came to nothing. I suspect it's just Tory myth and legend.

I take the opposite view , he needs to grasp the nettle now or his time will have gone. His eventual backing of the leave campaign was massive. If he leaves it until we have left the EU his time in the sun will have gone .The prodigal son needs to act now .

    No.
  • Mr. Song, depending how it's done, that's not always a bad thing. The Praetorian Guard forced Nerva to abandon his first named heir in favour of Trajan. When Trajan succeeded, he (if memory serves) expelled those Praetorians responsible. They were unable to respond because the emperor had the backing of the rather more numerous (and battle-hardened) Rhine legions.

I feel like the hypothetical new Labour* voter: not looking at BoJo and detecting any Prime Ministerial qualities in him but looking at May and thinking FFS, let's just roll the dice and see what happens.

*new voter for Labour, not voter for New Labour.

If Boris wants it I would have thought that a little circumspection was in order.

The plan should be to build the brand, construct a formidable foundation, climb to an invincible position through hard work. To be the only viable candidate in 2019 having raised the popularity and reputation of Boris with thought provoking sound and popular ideas.

Yes true telling Margaret Thatcher she had to go was much bigger and revived a loss situation in 1990 to a winning one two years later. That took some balls from cabinet members to tell her face to face the time was up.That is why the Tories are good at holding onto power.

Labour's economic policies might frighten plenty on here but Labour's betrayal of leaves EU vote and immigration will frighten plenty more.

Labour will continue the high economic immigration plus family but asylum immigration will be up with the likes of Germany in numbers with the left-wing nuts that follow corbyn and believe we should be taking thousands more.

Do it at start of the transition period. New pm for new period
  • Mr. Nick, indeed. Boris is wretched.

I find it hard to believe that Tory MPs would go for Boris as one of the final two. Surely no one could take him at his word and as the Brexit process unravels by the day he is the obvious candidate to take the blame.

Talking of the Brexit process - I recommend David Allan Green's piece on transitional arrangements - it's behind the FT paywall but well worth a read.

If Ubergate goes toxic for Khan that will indirectly boost Boris (on grounds that perhaps being M of L for two trouble-free terms isn't as easy as it looks).
  • The only game-changing potential candidate I can see on the horizon is Ruth Davidson. Unfortunately she's not an MP, which is a prerequisite.

Looking at the de facto Tory options -

The only sensible choice for the country appears to my mind to be Phil Hammond. A steady pair of hands to guide us through a tricky Brexit... his chancellor should be a leaver though, and the only name I can think for the job is Gove.

Hammond PM, Gove chancellor with Lidington up to Home, and Rudd across to Foreign Secretary.

A Clegg-Starmer-Hammond-Webb gov't would do well for the country, but those options aren't available right now.
For the theoretical Tories, Davidson would leapfrog the lot if she entered parliament.
  • I would fully expect May to recover slightly and Corbyn to drop further. The fundamentals of their day to day performances are the same as they were before the election.

    100% agree.

  • Mr. Herdson, how would a candidate get over half the votes yet not get through to the members' round?

They'd need to lose a lot of votes between an earlier and the final rounds. e.g.

    First

    A 157
    B 58
    C 31
    D 19

    Second

    B 106
    C 81
    A 78.

It would probably need the intervention of an investigative journalist.

Jeremy Corbyn is a certified idiot and yet he could be PM quite soon, so mere inexperience is surely no bar to high office.
  • BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg is listed as an “invited speaker” at the Conservative Party conference. And the news raises questions about the impartiality of the journalist and her organisation. Again.

Oh dear what were people saying yesterday.

A made up story in the Canary.

All those Tories who have spent years howling at the BBC should look at the Labour left doing it now and feel utterly embarrassed. Yes, Tories, you really did look that stupid.

Yes, but he is in the Labour Party.

Invited speaker in the same way as a few hours ago I was invited speaker on the next series of The Grand Tour, thus I must agree with Jeremy Clarkson's right wingery....

By "invited speaker", I mean as an Amazon Prime member I am eligible to apply for a ballot to get a ticket in the audience and have to agree that if I do get chosen and accept that the T&C state that somebody might put me on camera and ask me a question.

I think that, if we had a contest soon, the choices presented to the members would be one of Hammond and Rudd (probably Hammond) vs one of DD and Boris (probably DD).

That would leave many with a distrinctly sinking feeling. It would be barely worth the upheaval of change.

It isn't worth the upheaval of change, which I think will be the calculation which many MPs would make at the moment. It would be much better to take our time and have a proper contest, with some fresher faces, in 2016 or 2017. But, if Boris does move, MPs' hands will be forced.

Just wondering who on a particular channel's premier political debate show decided that giving the oxygen of publicity to the woman behind the fake news site the Canary was a good idea?

On the other hand get out the pitchforks for Owen Jones, who is speaking at the Tory conference:

I see BigJohnOwls is posting fake news horseshit again.

It's hardly surprising that Corbynistas are gullible.

I am sorry you do not understand the point I am making.

  • Mr. Herdson, yeah, I thought you meant in the final MP round.

In unsurprising news, the Kurds have gone for independence. We'll see what happens next: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-41419633

Mr. Eagles, but how would Davidson get the gig? She's not even an MP.

I hate to break it to you but 2017's nearly over. And as for 2016 ...

    E-mail from Corbyn.

He's being honest at least !

James, the next Labour government will transform Britain. :o

It's really very strange. After the GE, I was metaphorically hiding behind the sofa for weeks at the prospect of PM Corbyn, but after witnessing the buzzing of the hive on here I'm getting more relaxed about it every hour.

    Good evening, everybody.
