Clear out the deadwood. The more members of the old gang quit in the first year of this five year parliament, the more space will be freed up for younger more able up and coming people. There is nothing indispensable or remarkable about Damien Green. He is a mediocrity.
None of this will be remembered in 2022.

    TSE I am disappointed.

You've no pun to say you're all Green on next out.

More seriously, I can't imagine Davis will resign if his is indeed the killer punch. If the disgraceful behaviour of the police had been it, that might have been different.

Which is a shame because he's not doing well as Brexit Secretary and Gove for all I dislike the man would surely do better.
  • DavidLDavidL Posts: 50,762
Are we not all kinda bored of this stuff now? I think Green has been strengthened by the absurd tactics of former cops like Quick which engendered some sympathy and a lot of indignation. I don't think the Kate Maltby allegations were ever particularly serious and she in fairness seemed to have no desire to make much of them.

I think May will let this simmer unless something a lot more damaging comes out. She needs Green's support and reshuffles in this government seem to be even more difficult than they were in the Coalition.

I would not be tempted to bet on Green being next out even at 3/1, let alone the current odds.

If Davis does go then Gove has to be the obvious replacement - at least changing between phases of talks would be better than changing mid-phase.

Otherwise, Gove would make a worthy FSoS, though it would be a shame to lose him from DEFRA.

Would be very surprising if Davis resigned over this. The previous rumours about this related to Green being sacked on the basis of then known evidence. If new evidence has emerged that’s a different matter. If one reads the articles from the time, it is very clear that Davis was not taken a blanket pro-Green position.

As for whether Green is replace, who knows. There doesn’t have to be a Firet Secretary. May appointed him because she trusts him and respects his competence. If she doesn’t have someone else ready to take the role (or does, but that person is currently fulfilling an alternative job, eg Rudd) she is under no compulsion to appoint one.

If she really is unenthusiastic about Hammond, the best reason to appoint a First Sec is to make sure he is not the de facto Deputy PM.

But they seem to have been getting on pretty well recently.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. The gravity (if any) of the offence isn't really the issue, rather his absolute denials of anything happening, and as it's not the police/porn thing there is no principled reason for his clinging on.
In addition, it's felt he's in danger of being forced out anyway, choosing the time of his departure has the benefit os hanging on to some semblance of dignity.

Last, and not least, May has a breathing space in which she can easily weather his departure. She's wrong-footed many of her critics with the last minute stage 1 deal, both internal and external, and has as good a chance now as she's likely to get of promoting someone who is in her camp.

Does anyone know what Damian Green actually does? As Minister for the Cabinet Office he presumably has some sort of coordinating role for Cabinet Committees and the like. Is that it? Minister for the Cabinet Office has until recently been a relatively minor job but it has not been held by a DPM before.

As he is the obvious choice, it ties him even more to May and Brexit. It also makes Davis the likely successor to May as PM and Tory leader if a deal is finally completed.

Of course it is, Davis probably has the most MPs backing him of any potential replacement for May (including Grant Shapps who would orchestrate any no confidence vote in May) so if May makes him Deputy PM as well as Brexit Secretary Davis knows his chances of succeeding May rest on making a success of her government and Brexit

As he is the obvious choice, it ties him even more to May and Brexit. It also makes Davis the likely successor to May as PM and Tory leader if a deal is finally completed
Not sure! Unless the idea is keep your friends close and your enemies closer?
Of course it is, Davis probably had the most MPs backing him of any potential replacement for May (including Grant Shapps who would orchestrate any no confidence vote in May) so if May makes him Deputy PM as well as Brexit Secretary Davis knows his chances of succeeding May rest on making a success of her government and Brexit
That sounds like coded advice to lay Davis...
No, I think the most likely final 2 picked by MPs to put to the membership will be Davis and Rudd and Davis will then win
Would remain MPs really coalesce around a candidate so obviously repellent to the membership as her?
Would Rudd be particularly repellent to the membership?

I know she's a Remainer but she's hardly Soubry or Clarke. Even if compared to Clarke she is also a lightweight.
From personal experience, the membership will not countenance a Remainer until we are out.

After that, things will be different.

Ladbrokes' rules state 'Dead heat if more than one leave on the same day' so only part of your stake is a winner.

So if two cabinet ministers resign on the same day only half your stake wins, if three cabinet ministers resign on the same day, only a third of your stake is a winner, so on and so forth.

I thought this post on Conservative Home made some interesting points about what the Tories can learn from momentum:

    https://www.conservativehome.com/platform/2017/12/nick-denys-momentum-is-a-free-market-success-story-the-conservatives-are-an-outdated-closed-shop.html

Where I am a bit envious of Tories is that they have a webpage like ConservativeHome.

    Lukaku's a rich man's Christian Benteke.

He always seemed overrated whenever I saw him playing for Everton.

Look on the bright side, at least you're not managed by the Chelsea manager who sold Mo Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.

Just imagine a Chelsea attack with Hazard, Salah, and De Bruyne on current form.
