I can hear the spluttering already. How could such a comparison be made? How dare someone even make it! After all, Corbyn represents pretty much everything Thatcher fought against. And for Corbyn Thatcher epitomised the hard-hearted neoliberal capitalist ideology he has consistently opposed his entire political life.

Maggie Thatcher had her trusted colleagues killed - and herself blown up - by the IRA.

    Jeremy Corbyn? Not so much.....

FPT: on votes at 16, I've never really understood the link between things like sex and cigarettes and voting. Why would doing either make me want to vote or need to vote more?

However as soon as you're paying tax then I reckon it makes sense - no taxation without representation. Perhaps those saying we shouldn't allow U-18s the vote should also exempt them from income tax and NI? Does anyone know the proportion of 16-17 year olds who pay tax? If high then voting rights are a logical companion.

(I also don't buy the leaving education thing - FE might be rather higher up the priority list if 16-17 year olds could vote and no bad thing. But an argument for another post.)

Interesting hypothesis - and agree entirely that the Tories need to fight the battle on the policy front - where they significantly lagged Labour in 2017 - in 2015 they'd tied:

If 16 year olds have a National Insurance number and are earning the minimum wage, there is a case for them having a vote. Those snug in the bosom of further education - not so much.....

Education until 18 is now compulsory, so the only people paying more than token amounts of tax under that age will be the likes of child actors and singers. Maybe the odd professional computer gamer.

Some apprentices and trainees may also pay some tax, but overall it's a very small proportion I expect.

Everybody who spends money pays tax. VAT.
However, the reasoning behind the more recent trend in legislation that 'U18s are not mature enough to choose to' - Leave education, Buy cigarettes, Buy Alcohol, Buy Knives, and many other things suggests that there is in every other aspect of life total agreement in Parliament.

I would then remove them from NI and Income Tax. Though it's very difficult for u18s to be liable for Income tax, as they have to be in full time educations and the working time directive makes it difficult to work the hours.

More likely Attlee was the left-wing Thatcher and Corbyn would in government be a cross between Francois Hollande and Alexis Tsipras, the former lasted one term after abysmal polling, the latter won on hoscsecond attempt but is now also well behind in the polls

Of course, not only are sixteen year olds not old enough to go to war, but they're so impressionable that it's illegal for someone in a position of trust (e.g. a teacher) to have sex with them. However, I look forward to Labour campaigning to overthrow this discriminatory and demeaning legislation. /s

Mitterrand was far more pragmatic and intelligent than Corbyn and much more of a statesman. The Socialists also lost their legislative majority to Chirac's centre right coalition in 1986.

Jacinda Ardern' s programme in New Zealand is also not a million miles from Corbyn's and we will see how she does, of course she became PM despite Labour failing to win most seats, something Corbyn may replicate

    Would add 2 other similarities.
Firstly, a personal asceticism. People of simple and moderate pleasures. Both have an unworldly quality.
Secondly, both were persuaded of the value of image. MT ditching the headscarves and taking voice coaching. JC with the sharp suits. Contrast with the clip above. Despite this they retained the "unspun" image.

How much do yoga teachers earn? The last class I went to there were about 10 of us paying £6 each. I think the hall is about £15, plus of course there's insurance. I think she ran at least two other classes, so that would be something like £120 per week, out of which there's petrol, car maintainence and so on, plus updating and incidentals. Brings her income down to say £100 per week, which even in our neck of the woods isn't a living wage,

A good and eminently fair article - thanks Cyclefree.

As a footnote, both I and (more importantly) a prominent left-winger in Islington Labour Party thought it would be a mistake for Corbyn to pick McDonnell as Shadow Chancellor - surely, we felt, he should pick someone mainstream. I've lost contact with my colleague in Islington, but I've changed my mind - I think that recent history shows that it's disastrous when leader and (shadow) Chancellor falls out, and having an intelligent and unquestionably loyal supporter beside you avoids no end of trouble.

Be interesting to see some polling on whether 16-17 year olds would rather have

    a) 16 and 17 year olds getting the vote; or

    b) 16 and 17 year olds pay no Income Tax

So she’s getting paid £45 an hour, minus the expenses we all have to pay like running a car.

But it’s nothing to do with the yoga teacher, it’s that she seems to have a serious problem with other women earning their own money.

I’m gonna take a random guess that the person in charge of the grid girls at Silverstone doesn’t find it too difficult to recruit a few dozen models and actresses wanting to get their faces on TV.

A few years ago I lived next door to a “grid girl”. She had a degree from a perfectly good uni and decided to do it because she was young free and single and was a fantastic opportunity to travel the world. On the back of that job she increasingly got other work in the media and after a few years she went on to be a main presenter for a number of tv outlets.

But clearly in the view of the yoga teacher she should have got better educated or something, and was being massively exploited.

Based on Gove's rationale for Brexit, we all have to admit that the UK has been comprehensively trounced. Brexit was intended to bring down the old order in Europe and force a fundamental renegotiation of the treaties. Instead we are merely debating the precise nature and timing of our capitulation.

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/apr/19/brexit-could-spark-democratic-liberation-of-continent-says-gove

A British exit from the European Union could spark “the democratic liberation of a whole continent”, as other member countries follow Britain’s example and throw off the shackles of Brussels, the justice secretary, Michael Gove, has argued.

Over 80 per cent of British Jews believe Labour is too tolerant of anti-Semitism within its ranks, poll finds

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-anti-semitism-jeremy-corbyn-inquiry-shami-chakrabarti-yougov-poll-a7902251.html

Labour support just 13 per cent among UK Jews

    https://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/labour-support-just-13-per-cent-among-uk-jews-1.439325

Labour support among Jewish people was pretty low even before Corbyn got on the leadership ballot.

Here is an interesting article from before the 2015 leadership contest talking specifically about the Jewish vote and Labour.

    https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2015/06/labours-relationship-britains-jews-low-ebb-can-it-be-rebuilt

    Picked out a few bits.

    ____________________________________
Meanwhile, as a Labour adherent, the pain of election night was all too obvious. What was particularly difficult was watching the Tory vote in three “Jewish” seats push near or go past half –Hendon 49 per cent (previous Tory majority: 106), Finchley and Golders Green: 51 per cent, Harrow East: 50 per cent.

Anecdotal evidence – and after the poll fiasco, it’s as good as any – from campaigners tell me that the effect of the Ed Miliband leadership on our Jewish vote has been disastrous. As Luke Akehurst pointed out on LabourList, harsh criticism of Israel over the Gaza war and pushing for Palestinian statehood in the Commons has come to hurt Labour. Those vying for the Labour candidacy for mayor have certainly noticed.

    .....

Even if this was acceptable, BDS doesn’t change Israel’s mind. The Israeli Right say ‘ look, same old world, always against us. No point listening to them anyway’. What it does do very effectively is harden the hearts of the Jewish community against the Left in this country.
    ---------------------------------

Some of the opposition to the left in the Jewish community is based on some perfectly acceptable views regarding the Israel Palestine situation. There is, or could be said depending on your definiton, a Antisemitism problem although given a lot of the incidents either pre date Corbyn or are outside Corbyn's control then it is generally a Labour problem.

The media have certainly emphasised it more under Corbyn, not an unfair statement considering most would agree they have made more effort to be more negative regarding Corbyn in almost every way, this is unsurprisingly not the exception.

Ironically this all may end up making Labour a lot freer of Antisemitism than it would have otherwise. Lansman, Jewish leader of Momentum who Labour voters voted for in huge numbers (compared to his rivals) talked about how he wanted to improve Labours ability to combat Antisemitism and I think even mentioned Livingstone

Possibly this is why Ann Black was replaced for disputes, of course the media took this as an opportunity to whip up a story about Antisemitism

They really seem to think that models and hostesses are like street workers who need to be protected, rather than empowered women who seek to use what they have to advance themselves.

Good story. I wonder when the feminists are going to boycott Vogue magazine for their objectification of women with unattainable 20” waists, but it seems they only care about events where men attend like sporting events, car shows and corporate dinners.

I know someone here in the Middle East that runs an agency for these girls, those fired in Britain will probably end up out here as there’s no chance the local car shows will go without the European models.

Brings her income down to say £100 per week, which even in our neck of the woods isn't a living wage,
So she’s getting paid £45 an hour, minus the expenses we all have to pay like running a car.

It's none of my business how other people choose to make a living, nor is it the yoga teacher's.

Where is the “galvanising, liberating, empowering moment of patriotic renewal” that Michael Gove promised us? We're a long way down the rabbit hole now...
I’d they think we should pay £40bn for an annual £120bn trade deficit and nothing on financial services, then the £40bn is their loss.

The revenge of the pig-ugly against the good -looking.
I don’t feel particularly strongly about grid girls at F1 Races or the walk on girls at darts etc. but has debate fallen to such the degree that the argument against those who don’t like grid girls includes ‘you’re ugly/jealous’?

On a similar subject to 'Grid Girls' the Podium Girls on races like Le Tour also do things like meet and greet the VIP's at the stage start and then chauffer them to the finishing town.
It isn't just about looking pretty on the podium and posing for the stage winner's kiss.

A lot of these girls are students and hired as much for their personality as their looks. They’re doing it because it pays better than bar work or waitressing at the Grand Prix and other events.

Be interesting to see some polling on whether 16-17 year olds would rather have

    a) 16 and 17 year olds getting the vote; or

    b) 16 and 17 year olds pay no Income Tax

I suspect that those who are in the sixth form would say "sod the thickoes who left school at 16, I want my vote!"

Lol I'd happily sell my vote in order to forgo income tax :)
    Especially today.

    Hard Brexit it is, then.

EU really did try and overplay an already strong hand. Definitely the right decision to leave.
So what are you two die-hard Conservative partisans going to do when May offers BINO ?

Run off to UKIP - start your own Party perhaps (you couldn't do a worse job than UKIP).

  • Apparently ozil’s new arsenal deal is £350k a week. I bet he hopes there isn’t a GE until 2022...

A friend of mine used to work on the catering at Arsenal in the early 90's, she soon got picked out to work in the bit where the directors and players wives got their hospitality.
I heard a few funny stories at the time.

And so says a right-wing swivel eyed loon.

It was almost certainly not the right decision to leave as evidenced by the Government's own economic analysis. Was speaking to an Indian diplomat fiend of mine over the weekend and he reckons any FTP with India will hugely benefit India and not the other way round. He also smirked at what he saw as the UK losing leverage and influence throughout the World.

Explains why the Premier League renewed the MOTD rights for virtually the same price.

The last report I read was that amazon aren’t ready this time around. They have hired a top sports rights guy but he doesn’t start until after the bidding for the rights this time around have been submitted.

The Report said they will take their time and go for it next time.

Interestingly amazon own twitch, which already has a sub model per channel (albeit voluntary one) and have recently bought rights for big esports league. Their tech can handle super high res streaming to massive audiences.

We do, of course. What do you think? Just breathe the words, Nissan, Airbus. That should do the trick, We'll take a trade-only deal over no deal. More likely Norway, though. Feel the love for the EU acquis...
Yup. If this is correct, then 31st January 2018 will be known as the day that Brexit died. Or the UK signed its own death warrant.

One of the big things Corbyn is really missing that Thatcher had is the SDP, I can't see the Conservatives splitting though. Maybe the harder Brexit part of the party if I had to pick a wing and due to Brexit not going the way they like but I think it would just be a civil war within the party rather than a split.

Mr. Eagles, paid employment for the women who choose to do it.

I don't bother with pre- and post-race stuff, so don't see them at all. However, they do work at the VIP and PR side of things. It's idiotic to just decide that equality for women means making women unemployed because their job isn't on the Puritans' Approved Work list.

People are losing their jobs because of politically correct bullshit.

To be fair, the headline and the substantive are often well distanced from each other.

Services has always been a problem - it's why I think a CETA-style deal isn't going to happen. The importance and influence of the City is, in some respects, a hindrance to deals rather than a help.
