Trump, for the moment at least, still needs to win elections. China doesn't. At the very least I would expect China to hit back hard on tariffs designed to hurt Trump in the midterms. They can always drop the tariffs later if they want to back down.

With the US acting antagonistically towards the EU there is always the potential for a partial realignment that would bring China and the EU closer together. Osborne would have worked for that if the referendum hadn't been lost.
