Noticed some comments on Twitter 2 days about Huawei and ex Cameron advisers sitting on the board. Am wondering if Williamson will go quietly or whether things kick off.

He's not going to have any support over this. If there are three posts in government that really must be held by people who don't leak it's defence, foreign affairs and Home Office, dealing with internal and external security. If he's leaking on issues of national security, everyone will agree with May. (Heck, everyone will agree anyway, because as noted she's quite right.)

That said, he's popular in his constituency, Bromptonaut aside. I think he'll be able to stay on if he wants to.

The joint highest Tory share in the country with Christchurch and South Holland and the Deepings. The main reason is that the biggest town in the seat only has a population of 15,000.

My understanding is that Huawei are about 2 years ahead of everyone else. That may be one reason why the US are putting pressure on allies - to wait for Cisco and others to catch up. I also believe that some UK network firms have already decided not to use Huawei kit on the grounds of security.

The excitement of the crowd in the Farage video looks good for the Brexit party, like it or loathe it. The only recent comparison is Corbyn during Corbymania, when he took Labour from a total wipe-out to preventing the Tories getting a majority - a remarkable result given the initial polls.

It is very small by the standards of anything called a City so the outskirts probably a bigger factor than normal.

As a Labour supporter it isn't something I dread as the crowd does look older and white. I don't doubt there are some 2017 Labour voters among them but the main source of Brexit party voters will be 2017 Tory voters. In terms of Labour getting elected I'd argue the Brexit party is a good thing overall.

On your other point there was real enthusiasm there, something you just don't really see with the Tories. Farage has a ceiling though which stops him in Westminster elections, I think most expect him to do well in the European ones.

That's simply untrue and one day the penny (tee hee) will drop for those idiots in the ERG.

The problems were insuperable once you factor in the inability of the ERG to compromise on their beloved utopia and the non majority.

The Conservative party are riven on Europe and have been for decades. Cameron called the referendum to try and end that: not the for the country (who couldn't have given a shit at the time about the EU) but for his party. Then he buggered off. She was dealt a grim hand indeed.

I don't doubt there are some 2017 Labour voters among them but the main source of Brexit party voters will be 2017 Tory voters. In terms of Labour getting elected I'd argue the Brexit party is a good thing overall.

If we are still in the EU by the next general election Farage will break through that ceiling

I also believe that some UK network firms have already decided not to use Huawei kit on the grounds of security.

The real catch is that there are no real standards for 5G, everyone are building boxes to try and build a system. All the fun and games about Huawei are more about the trade war between the USA and China. The US has a major problem in that the radio frequencies available to their Internet companies are the wrong ones, every other countries are a lot better. So here we have a country with a very bad record of intercepting it's own and foreign nationals communications, and China.

    ___

I just checked her Wikipedia entry. She is lower middle class, state school educated, daughter of a paratrooper, first of her family to go to Uni (Reading). Her mother died of cancer when she 15, so..

"To pay her way through sixth-form college, Mordaunt became a magician's assistant to Portsmouth magician Will Ayling, once president of The Magic Circle.[12]"

Colourful, but impressive. The Tories could do a lot worse. Unless she has some terrible skeletons?

wiki is bit evasive about her private life. Not that it should matter.

What is this knifed expression. Unnecesary
It's simply a modern contraction of "put/stick the knife into (someone)" which has been around for ages.

Yeah, as long as we are signed up to the ECHR capital punishment cannot be imposed even in wartime

Could it not be justified as a mercy killing?

Researching Ms Mordaunt's backstory leads me to the unhappy discovery that there was once such a thing as "Howard's Harem": the young women promoted into the Parliamentary Tory party by Michael Howard.

    Howard's Harem??

    Boak.

*cough* Backed Mordaunt at 80/1 a while ago...

Edited extra bit: for next Con leader or PM, I forget which.

Oh, and the tagged MP is overboard.

As a disgraced former defence secretary, can't he just become secretary for international trade? It's not like he would have to achieve anything in the post...

Well that solves his promise to resign if he didn't get a grip on drugs and violence in prisons.

The one time I saw him on the parliament channel at the dispatch box he was impressive - on top of his brief and engaging properly with his opposite number. Even getting positive responses from Labour MPs.

This illustrates the tendency to give ministers absurdly short periods in charge of a department, so that the relatively good ones have no beneficial effect. Meanwhile Grayling is still failing at DofT which Private Eye spells DafT.
