A piece of anecdata: just had a pleasant lady from the council knock on our front door to check the voter registration data for this property.

South Cambs certainly seem proactive on voter registration.

When we apologised for not having filled out the form yet (because we, ahem, lost it), she smiled and said: "If everyone did it I wouldn't have a job."

Edit: and first, and off-topic. Oh well.

In a funny way it doesn't seem that different to my old school form tutor who voted Tory in '97 and became rapidly annoyed by the new Labour government announcing all kinds of changes which didn't seem to have been properly thought through. Politically minded people have a tendency to think that with public servants it's all about ideology. It isn't. It's more often than not about practicality. I don't see a great deal of difference between teachers moaning about Gove and employees complaining about their managers.

On Nick Palmer's point about Corbyn and the Greens, I have to say this 2015 Green voter has not yet been devoured by Corbynmania. I voted Green as a vaguely left of centre protest vote in a safe Labour seat. Miliband's refusal to embrace electoral reform and condemn phone hacking at the Mirror (over which he should have felt vindicated) was symbolic of a cultural malaise in the Labour party that I don't see Corbyn fixing at the moment.

As we've gone off-topic, the pub where we have a quiz is under new management. They used stock George Wright anyway, but from November, they'll be stocking three George Wright brews (Drunken Duck,Cheeky Pheasant at al) and six other real ales from a 50 mile radius.

All £2.50 a pint but CAMRA members get 50p a pint off the George Wright brews and 20p off the others. £2 a pint for good beer that eats Boddingtons for breakfast and defecates John Smith (courtsey the Big Bang Theory).

    Come to the NW.

I'm not convinced teachers as a whole are all that left wing. There was polling that suggested more voted Tory in 2010 than Labour. Neither do I think Cameron would have removed Gove if he felt the entire profession was irredeemably anti-tory.

A lot of people who think teachers are all very left wing seem to live in London. Perhaps there's a certain kind of mentality that's attracted to state secondaries in the capital? Not sure it's quite the same elsewhere.

FPT, UKIP's performance in local by-elections has been a good deal better from September onwards than it was earlier in the Summer. They've averaged 15% in 20 contests. That's probably down to the EU and migrants being in the news.

With two at least reasonably viable alternatives vs the Tories (as opposed to 1 in our election) and the longer period in government and thus chance of dissatisfaction to set in, surely even getting largest party status will be tough? Time to see what the canadian experts think I guess.

I'm guessing 'off-topic' is a vanilla forums thing that PB chooses to observe mainly in the breach, and I've never found quite how far into outer-space the limit is.

I have had something to do with electoral registration myself. There was a very poor response rate for the first set of forms sent out - less than half returned - with the manager bemoaning the money it was wasting us since the forms had to be sent out again. It's funny how you see things differently when you're on the other side.

Agreed Mr Dodd but as a free marketeer I don't want to see govt create imbalances with nonsense like help to buy. Right to buy has been here for decades, good or bad, but the govt deliberately inflates property prices to create a false feel good factor.

Linking to Canada, Martin Kettle mentions it in the Guardian today, admittedly only in reference to the Scottish situation.

All perfectly fine from a Unionist point of view, but all he does is vaguely mention a new constitutional settlement (good luck with that!) and completely ignores the 'vow' and Smith commission.

  • I was reading one of Thursday's threads, and I saw some of the conversation on here re. education. As someone on the left, I'm well aware that some schools will always be better than others; but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to close the gap between schools, and make sure that as many schools as possible can offer children equality of opportunity, and given kids the best chance at life. Those on the Left I know don't have an issue with parents wanting to do the best for their children; however governments cannot afford to look at society from the individualistic perspective of middle class parents who see private education as the best opportunity for their children. They have to make sure, that for those that cannot afford private education, a wealth of opportunities also exists so they can succeed as well. Someone's life chances should be be pre-determined before they are even born.

@Casino_Royale - I think you're right that there's some value on the Conservatives in Canada, if you can get odds of (say) 7.0 or more on Most Seats. (Trudeau may of course end up as PM even if Harper does get most seats).

People from my sort of background needed Grammar schools to compete with children from privileged homes like Shirley Williams and Anthony Wedgwood Benn.

bb63 When I lived in the Lake District..where I was born..the locals were always complaining about the incomers buying up all the local houses..they went somewhat quiet when you asked them who were the sellers..they were.. a few locals got relatively wealthy when they sold grannies little picturesque cottage and moaned when strangers turned up at the pub.

Don't doubt that Mr D, its market forces, its govt interference I object to.

The High Court in London has ruled that the GPS-reliant ride-hailing app used by Uber does not break the law.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised at that decision. You could easily imagine it having gone the other way.

I thought it was left-wing public schoolboys and girls who were the ones who hated grammars so much and wanted to close every 'f***ing' one. Couldn't risk working class people getting ideas above their station and not voting Labour.

Canada is quite a good advertisement for First Past The Post. The various parties each have regional strength, so it works reasonably well as originally envisaged.
  • blackburn63blackburn63 Posts: 4,492

The reason that the grammar schools were phased out was because middle-class parents of kids who failed to 11+ exam didn't like the secondary moderns. The move was politically popular in many areas. Maggie, when EdSec, oversaw much of the change.

Correct Mike, grammars were closed by the parents of children who failed the entrance

And it very aptly makes the point about social mobility. We want upward mobility but never address the obvious corollary, downward mobility. Please make that acceptable to the middle classes.
I'm not sure of your point tbh. I've never really got social mobility, its the modern expression for the rat race or keeping up with the Jones I suppose.

Where do the kids from those areas who wouldn't get into the grammar schools go? (not a criticism, a genuine question)

    ------------------------------------------------------

I guess to the better achieving comprehensives in the nicer areas? There would be places there vacated by those going to the grammar.. It would be in the same town so wouldn't affect them much

So the poor kids would either hi to a grammar or a better comp, and the richer kids would go to the existing good comp or a grammar... And the poor kids parents property would be worth more & the area would improve

It's not the children. Where would the teachers go?
What's wrong with the simple minded notion of all an areas schools being good schools?

Transport for London is currently investigating whether there should be a minimum five-minute wait between Uber passengers ordering a car and being picked up.
I don't really see why they're not going with the traditional man-with-a-red-flag solution here.

There are plenty of Tory MPs who are worried about the tax credit changes. As I said on the previous thread, there are so many changes coming down the pike, it's not clear to me what the actual impact will be in the round. I'd like more quantitative data, not just edge-case andecdota.
