I have this feeling that UKIP might just pull this off.

Richmond Park sent a message about Brexit, perhaps the Leave Wallahs of Sleaford and North Hykeham may also decide a message too.

At the Newark by-election in 2014 the swing from Con to UKIP was 15.5%. UKIP needs a swing of 20.3% to win in Sleaford and North Hykeham.

I think the voters in Sleaford are quite comfortable with the government supporting Brexit, even if they don't know what that means yet.

Labour gain from Con in Telford and Wrekin

It's probably the only marginal Westminster seat that the Tory MP is severely unpopular.

I made a forecast for a year now that Telford will probably be a Labour gain in the next election.

We will leave our MPs behind, we will pass through the Conservative patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest constituency, and listen to their chortling and tittering... while we conduct Austerity Debates! Then, and when we are finished, the only sound they will hear is our laughter, while we sail to Telford where the sun is warm, and so is the... Comradeship!

Theresa May is Mrs Thatcher without the warmth, people skills, or election winning brilliance

Margaret Thatcher was rightly the most despised prime minister since Winston Churchill, holding office while the City and other spivs wrecked this country and sent it to the dogs. But I've never heard anyone say she was incompetent. Evil, yes, but not incompetent. Theresa May and the present cabinet are a shower of directionless twerps without the slightest clue of what they are doing. One of them wears pearls, another's got a funny haircut and makes "gaffes". It's almost a government of Monty Python characters. Nobody around seems to have a foreign or trading policy, while nutty generals talk of Blighty taking on Russia in the Baltic. The dustbin of history awaits. Unfortunately there seems to be practically no opposition whatsoever, unless you count - which you shouldn't - the Daily Mail, maybe the Church of England, and the BBC. Perhaps next week it will be the royal family, the Women's Institute, or the Bar Council? What I said: no opposition.

May is doing rather better 5 months into her premiership in the polls than Thatcher was in hers. In early December 1979 Labour led 45% to 40% with MORI and 46.3% to 42.1% with NOP and 42% to 38% with Gallup.

    O/T French election

New left-wing primary poll (Harris Interactive for France Television) - one of the first trying to poll only primary voters

    First round
    Valls 45 Montebourg 28 Hamon 11 Filoche 6 Lienemann 5
    Larrouturou 3 Benhamias 1 de Rugy 1

Valls seems to walk it but...

    Second round
    Valls 51 Montebourg 49

    Main lessons:
    - Valls dominates the first round as he is (for now at least) teh only representative of the right-wing and centre-wing of the socialists.
    - The left-wing block (Montebourg/Hamon/Filoche/Lienemann) represents 50%
    - Thus, even with the probabale support of the three non-socialists (Larrouturou, Benhamias, de Rugy), Valls is not at all sure to win the second round.

Another element against Valls is that at least one other candidate will join the field this weekend, representing the centrist brach of the party: Vincent Peillon. Although not particularly populat in the general public, he seems to gather around him a lot of former Hollande supporters in the party's apparatus.
No poll including Peillon has been done yet but I suspect that he will reduce Valls first round score and thus the gap between Valls and Montebourg.

It will be an interesting test of how solid the Remain feeling is in a Leave area. It's conceivable that the people who don't go along with the majority there are very stubborn in their view. 40% can get you very far in a FPTP election, especially if UKIP are able to split off the fanatical Leavers.

Well one of us does. It is a fact that they were both widely despised. I mean in the country, not in the narrow confines of the Tory party, golf clubs, and chambers of commerce.

"Best" is a matter of opinion. "Undoubted" is simply incorrect, unless only doubt in the minds of Tories counts.

In my opinion the best prime ministers since WW2 were Clement Attlee and Harold Wilson.

I have this feeling that UKIP might just pull this off.

Richmond Park sent a message about Brexit, perhaps the Leave Wallahs of Sleaford and North Hykeham may also decide a message too.

No way. UKIP on less than 20%.
It will be an interesting test of how solid the Remain feeling is in a Leave area. It's conceivable that the people who don't go along with the majority there are very stubborn in their view. 40% can get you very far in a FPTP election, especially if UKIP are able to split off the fanatical Leavers.
Leave may be popular (though Kipper, Lab and Tory are all on that ticket), but the local factor is that Victoria Ayling is a deeply unpleasant person.

"Comrades, our own Parliamentary Party don't know our full potential! They will do everything possible to test us; but they will only test their own embarrassment.

What I said: no opposition.

LOL. Listing the undoubted two best PMs (Churchill as war PM rather than peacetime) of the twentieth century as the 'most despised' is comical. You really do have an extremely warped view of the world.

It is incorrect to say Churchill was 'despised' as PM, he was personally hugely popular right across the spectrum once he led Britain in the war in 1940 and his return to office in 1951 was mainly a result of guilt at rejecting the Tories in 1945, it was never a rejection of him. In terms of despised PMs Brown, Blair, OK Thatcher, Heath, Macdonald were all more despised in the last 100 years

    Will self is a prat.

You didn't need to watch QT to know that!
Farage got the better of him though ;-)
Once upon a time he wrote vaguely interesting novels, now he is just a self important miserable left wing prat.
    +1

Emphasis on self important, with oodles of arrogance.

For any oneirologists here, I had a dream last night that the Lib Dems triumphed in Sleaford and Ronnie Barker was their candidate. What can that mean?

Though the Labour candidate said he voted Remain. but is "comfortable" with the ref result. Very much like myself and some others.

Farage will have to accept that his teeth are too terrible for him to ever make it in the US. Perhaps a cheapo implants weekend in Kracow might be in order.

Even in '83 Maggie only got 43.9% of the vote. Even at the height of her powers most Britons voted against her.
