I think our vote was pathetic. It is not for foreign states to tell others what their capital should be, and even less so to tell other powers whether they can recognise that fact.
Of course, there are nearly 4 million reasons why the British government acted as it did.
I do take the points about reasons for our vote, but of course it is technically up to foreign states to tell others about their own states - that's why there exist de facto states which are not recognised by all, and one poor state not recognised by anyone. Yes it objectively makes little sense to deny certain states exist when on the ground they do, and little sense to complain about where states have their own capital, but it is not that outside the norm of international relations is it?
